In beginning of Jan I flew Lufthansa to Germany where the flight got delayed by almost a day, causing a major inconvenience, and I can just remember being really mad because of how disorganised it was when getting off the plane and trying to get to the hotel etc. But long story.

Anyway I just read in the news paper that we are entitled to a refund if the flight is delayed by more than 3 hours and is over a certain amount of km, does anyone know the procedure of placing a claim or whatever. I know it was delayed for our own safety but if anyone could understand what we had to go through that night I think you'd also want some kind of rebate.

Did you have to pay for your own accommodation as well?

Surely you should just contact their accounts department and quote your reference? Did the article not give you any contacts?

All international airlines should pay for your overnight accommodation if the flight is badly delayed. Refunds, meals, free tickets etc. vary from airline to airline based on policy. Usually it is a cutoff of 'x' hours.

However, I don't know what your chances are now, having already flown. I would have kicked up a storm before the flight. Then they are usually quick to give in. Was this the A380 last week?

You just need to look up EU flight delay compensation.

Depending on the reason of the delay, you entitled to compensation even if it took place in January.

Had a similar problem with KLM in Dec 2010, we were pretty much the last aircraft to land when Schipol was closed and we needed to catch a connecting flight to Munich, long story short, we booked out own accommodation because the queue was 5 hours long, and sent the bill to KLM claims, as far as I recall they paid us out in full, they even refunded us for clothing and taxi fares that we had to pay after the delay and the fact they lost out luggage for two weeks

I've always been compensated for a delayed flight. SAA gave me a free regional ticket once for a 6 hour delay, and Kenya airways gave me $300 for an 8 hour. It all happened on the day, and I did query it at the airport at the same time. I have a feeling those who left without complaint got nothing.

If you get to your final destination with a delay of three hours or more, you are entitled to compensation of between €250 and €600, unless the airline can prove that the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances (weather conditions, strike, security measures).

The compensation amounts:

- EUR 250 for all journeys of 1 500 kilometres or less;

- EUR 400 for all journeys between 1 500 km and 3 500 km;

- EUR 600 for all journeys of 3 500 km or more.

Additionally, airlines can be held liable for damages resulting from delays.
You are also entitled to care by the airline (phone call, refreshments, meal, accommodation, transportation to the place of accommodation).

If you would like any assistance - AirHelp.eu is there for you. We file the claim on your behalf and collect all the evidence based on our vast historical data. We take care of all the difficult paperwork and time consuming communication with the airlines and fight for your compensation.
