I have a friend who needs ADSL, but his place doesn't have a phone line at all, so its all from scratch.

Whats the easiest, cheapest way to get ADSL installed and up and running? Are there any Telkom deals where they install everything (phone, dsl) and give you a modem etc? Its pretty easy to chop and change ISP's once everything is up, but getting there is the issue.

He actually likes the thought of getting the Afrihost 1mbps uncapped bundle (DSL line + data) deal @ R279.

Im not to sure..but i think Telkom has a special running still where you pay a small price of R169(for 3 months) i think..and in under 7 working days they install you're phone line/adsl line and give you a router(self install)...

Hi There,
I would go look at the telkom page for their specials and compare them to Afrihost.
I have found Telkom very responsive when it comes to new installations. Remember though that if they provide you with the modem you are usually locked in to them as the ISP for a couple of years.
I now make use of Afrihost as my ISP and they deliver superb service and very responsive.

Hi markface,

On the Telkom line side, go to a telkom and sign up a normal Telkom home land line with Weekend Planner bundle. The they install the line for free as part of their speacial. The install fee for Telkom line is about R700 if not mistaken.

After that is done just ask them to active ADSL and that is also free.

On the ISP side of things it's a wide spectrum... Alot of competitors and all depends what you want from them. Best bet is to ask for Trial accounts like OpenWeb and all the others is offering and try it out.

Personally i'm with OpenWeb and happy with my product.

Just get the ADSL and then go to a ISP for the rest. PS IMO don't get a TREDnet router, although cheap the price shows it's colours.
I was very happy with Netgear.

Hi markface,

Hemi's right, go ahead and get the ADSL line on special and Netgear make good routers. Billion routers are pretty good, too.

IMO, go with ANY other ISP than Telkom. Go for one of the trial accounts around the forums or you can get 5GB for free with imaginet right now. Always good to try before you buy, so you can see what the service is like.
