Physically go to your nearest Telkom shop
http://www.telkom.co.za/app/customerservicebranches/
and purchase an ADSL filter that will allow you to receive landline calls while online. Around R160 I am led to believe, but with luck and charm you'll get it for free. We're all corrupt.

Buy an ADSL modem of your choice from any (most) computer shops (search this forum for suggestions). Around R500 or the basic (sufficient) to R1500 for wireless connections.

Complete an application for ADSL at your local Telkom shop, clearly stating you will do the installation yourself. Telkom charges R400 bucks for a techie to merely plug the filter into your wall outlet. Granted, they will solve further connection problems, but hey, read further.

Install your ADSL modem using the software provided. READ the installation instructions. Not sure if this is standard, but my Microcom Modem had a sticker at the back clearly defining it as a default Annex A connection (which should be a South African option in a drop-down during install.) Accept defaults. If you choose your ISP wisely, issues will be resolved in no time.

Wiring
The filter you've bought/scored, is for your telephone line. I.e., if you have two ports in your wall plug, one always goes directly to your ADSL modem, while the filter is used inbetween your telephone line and the wall plug. So, if you have one port in your wall plug, purchase a split adaptor. But make sure the adaptor goes one-to-two from the wall plug, i.e one to the modem, and one to the filter -> telephone line.

7 Working days max, Telkom should phone you to inform you heaven has arrived. Regardless, the data LED on your modem should stop flickering (it may take a couple of seconds or a reboot). If it doesn't, review the steps above.

Coose an ASDL provider
Telkom charges R270 odd for a 192 connection p.m (which I find fast enough), but you still need to pay a middleman to connect to the Telkom infrastructure. Search the forums. But "You pays your money you makes your choice". My choice? www.webafrica.com. R199 p.m. Five minutes on 0861 555 222 and my account was active. Another call to sort out my stupidity and voila!

ADSL filter is R39.90 at a Telkom shop

Telkom will charge you the R440 incl. irrelevant of whether you do the installation yourself or not... you may get it a little quicker by self installing, bu this option is only available in some areas.

7 Working days max, done 36 ADSL installations, only 2 of them took less than 7 working days... average time is 2-3 weeks.

Many ISP's to choose from, should prolly mention that Telkom doesn't cap.

All that info is only relevant to you. Every ADSL application has its own dimension. I am now 2 weeks past my given installation date and no word from F@ckKom. I have even spoken to Pam at the CEOs office and she assured me she would report back as to why I was given an installtion date of 19th January but the job was only assigned to the Techie on the 23rd.

Telkom is incapable of doing an installation in:
a- A reasonable time frame
b- When Promised

Bite me you Telscum barstards.

Carlhead - not sure about the R440 fee. I cleared that up with telkom before I did the self-installation and was assured there is no cost if I do it myself. Guess I'll know end of the month.

I suspect you may be charged mac :/ I don't think I'd trust Telkom if I were you... be prepared :)

Agreed - mine took over 6 MONTHS - and that with phoning them every day - even phoned the techies direct. And, before anyone thinks it was an exchange problem etc, the people we bought the house I live in from, had an ADSL line that they cancelled around the same time I applied for my line!
