Getting dual citizenship

I have no problem getting a Mauritian citizenship(went to Port Louis home affairs during my holiday with my mum and dad, only problem was that my birth certificate didn't have my parents name on it).My main concern is losing my SA citizenship.

EDIT:off topic but how is your sister?Nothing was your fault I mean she could of been a pro sports driver and that could of happened, hopefully she had a lesson in life...it can be short :)

What problem are you facing? I've been a dual citizen my whole life (EU and SA). Depending on where you were born and where your parents were born you can get it.

This is what wiki says 'Prior to 2004, South Africa in principle did not recognise the multiple citizenship of its nationals unless the citizen applied for an exemption or permission letter under a 1995 law permitting South African citizens to travel using foreign passports.

Since 2004, South African dual nationals may travel without hindrance as long as they enter and leave South Africa on their South African passports. Dual nationals may petition for temporary, emergency or "permanent" South African passports for this purpose.

However, a South African citizen who by a formal and voluntary act acquires the citizenship of another country, automatically loses his or her South African citizenship unless they apply for, and receive permission to retain their South African citizenship before acquiring the citizenship of another country.[1]

South African citizens under the age of twenty-one (21) years are exempt and do not require permission as long as they acquire the foreign citizenship before their twenty-first (21st) birthday. They automatically retain their South African citizenship for life unless; once they have reached the age of 21 and they then wish to acquire a further foreign citizenship. They will then have to apply for prior permission to retain their South African citizenship - failing to do so, they will automatically lose their South African citizenship.[2]

Many South Africans have claims to another citizenship (see: Demographics of South Africa).'

Im just wondering how do you apply?

She is recovering very well, thank you... she can even talk now... And remembers exactly what happened moments before the whole accident, which is good news because it means her brain isn't affected. She even tries walking, assisted of course... I owe a lot to God really because I honestly thought that was it... And the good wishes really did help as well... Life's can end in an instant... Now, I know that.

Good stuff, your parents stop blaming you?

No, my mom is now cool about it, even wrote me an SMS to say how sorry she is... Now that worst is over, I do think that she did not mean what she said and I forgive her...She was here this weekend to see us... all is good now... For a while there, my life was shaken...

Korn1, I'm pretty sure you were provided with the answers to this in that other thread of yours but if that was not sufficient to make you go scratch around the dha websites let me do it for you.

http://www.dha.gov.za/ Click on "Civic Services"--> "Citizenship"--> "Retention of Citizenship"

Retention of Citizenship

If you want to formally obtain the citizenship of another country while retaining your South African citizenship, you can apply for retention of your South African citizenship by:

completing Forms DHA-1664 and DHA-529
paying the required application fee
Please note: the application must be made and approved before acquisition of the other citizenship, or you will lose your SA citzenship automatically on the date that you have acquired the foreign citizenship.

You can submit the forms to any office of the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa, or any South African embassy, mission or consulate overseas.

Now you are probably wondering where you get those forms mentioned above, don't despair:
http://www.dha.gov.za/ Click on "Help"--> "Download documents"--> "BI-529" & "BI-1664"

or I've added two easy clickable links for you:

http://www.dha.gov.za/PDF/civic/bi-1664.pdf

Now you probably want to know what this is going to cost you so go http://www.dha.gov.za/ Click on "Help"--> "Costs of services"--> "CIVIC AFFAIRS"--> "18.A"
18.A

Retention of South African citizenship, in terms of section 6(2) of Act 88 of 1995.

Now you are probably wondering where your local Home Affairs offices are or how to contact them so I suggest you go to http://www.dha.gov.za/ Look just below "Help" you clicked on earlier and click on "Contact Us" which has a red background.

No problem. The dha link was provided, all you had to do was follow it and scratch around ;)

Trying to think of a reason to give them to retain my citizenship..man im south african and thats why I want it plus for my future family maybe.

Why? I know its not best, but I have used my EU to get out of SA into Moz and back a couple of times. They ask questions, but thats where it ends.

Maybe so the government can keep track of your movements?

According to the South African Citizenship Amendment Act (No 17 of 2004) a citizen is guilty of an offence and is liable to a fine or imprisonment IF he/she:

Enters or departs from the Republic by making use of the passport of another country
While in the Republic, makes use of his/her citizenship from another country to gain advantage or avoid duty

I really don't understand why. What irks me even more is that you can automatically be deprived of your SA citizenship even though the constitution prohibits this.

Well they stamp your passport on departure and then you use your other one you don't have a stamp of departure?

Still don't see the issue. What if you lost your passport and get issued a new one by the embassy overseas, no stamps! Or what if you lost it in a place where there is no sa embassy/consulate and you approach the british high commission for assistance (they do that for commonwealth members) and they issue you with a uk passport with "commonwealth citizen" classification, that's even more of a curve ball!

Hmmm not sure what they do when you lose a passport but im sure they say that it was lost?

Why? Because spending 12 months in prison sucks. ;)

Good thing that the chop at the border post wasn't up to speed on SA laws.
