Hey guys...

So I've had my ADSL line for about 10 days now in my apartment in Cape Town.
Since the day of installation I have experienced speeds of MAX 2.2mbps (however I am paying for a 4mb line).
I have tested this with WIFI and an ethernet connection - same result.

So the technician came out today, connected his windows laptop to my router with my ethernet cable and got a speed of 3.5mbps. I was told I should upgrade to 10mbps to get 6mbps speed. Hmmm..

To me it seems it's my macbook pro that is causing the issue.

Here are my laptop details:

2012 MacBook Pro
OS X 10.9.4

Does anyone have any troubleshooting ideas? Been fiddling with settings for hours, with zero luck.

I have the Huawei Telkom router by the way.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Cheers!

Thanks for the response! I reset my router to defaults (Telkom's Guest account) and am getting 3.43mbps on the saix.net speedtest. Just connected back to my account and am getting 1.79mbps..

Any advice on what to do next? Thanks again :)

Use telkoms Guest account and do a speed test on saix.net

Who is your ISP and what package are you on?

Are you sure your Wifi is secured? Look under "Attached devices" if its a Netgear.

I am with Telkom, and I am on the 4mbps uncapped business package.

Yes it is secured (by that, I assume you mean a secure password to join the network).
It's a Huawei Telkom router.
Security = WPA2-PSK
WPA Encryption = AES

Ok so are you 100% sure its only you/whoever lives with you thats on the wireless network?

Get a test account from Afrihost, and if you see good speeds ditch Failkom and move to AH.

But it makes no sense, the line is operating at the correct speed as a guest account, but with my account it's at 2mbps... Does that mean they're throttling me?

Yes I am.

Telkom Internet Uncapped Fair Usage Policy
Telkom Internet uncapped accounts are designed for either
home or business use, and customers need to select the
appropriate package designed for their access port speed
and type of usage application (for example, for business or
home use).
Telkom Internet uncapped products are not capped in the
ordinary course. However, Telkom reserves the right to apply
restrictions on an uncapped account if a customer’s behaviour
is determined to be affecting the user experience
of other customers on Telkom’s network. Such restrictions
may include but are not limited to throttling a customer’s
throughput speeds to an appropriate proportion of the
actual port speed and / or shaping a customer’s bandwidth

to limit the use of bandwidth intensive protocols and applications.

Examples of customer behaviour which may compromise
Telkom’s network performance include, for example, causing
network congestion, include running excessive concurrent
internet sessions or accessing excessive bandwidth
intensive protocols such as peer-to-peer.
In the event of such behaviours, Telkom reserves the right
to terminate the account of a customer whose usage is
continuously affecting Telkom’s network performance, as a
customer of Telkom Internet uncapped products.

In order to assist a customer to be made aware of when his
or her behaviour is compromising Telkom’s network performance,
Telkom will provide to the customer such information
as is practically available regarding the customer’s
usage status by way of a usage tracker tool. A customer
will be able to track when his or her usage is dangerously
high. Once usage is indicated as being dangerously high,
Telkom reserves the right to suspend the relevant customer’s
usage within 24 (twenty four) hours of usage having
reached such levels. Customers who are restricted by Telkom
in the aforementioned manner in a calendar month
will be returned to full service profile at the beginning of
the next month.
The above controls will be implemented by Telkom in
addition to those set out elsewhere in this AUP regarding
unlawful behaviour.

Final thought, pay R50 more and move to Afrihost business.

Before you do that, click here and find out if you are Throttled or not.

Yeah was just about to post here saying I just performed the tracker test from Telkom and I'm on the lower end (still green) which means I am not being throttled...

I dont know why, but im still convinced that someone is using your Wifi.

Haha get a load of this... I just phoned MWeb, got a trial account and did a speedtest, got 3.5mbps.. Upgraded to them within 10 minutes.

Honestly... Telkom.

Cancelling with them immediately.

I said Afrihost, I moved from Mweb because they were throttling me!

Were you uncapped? Their 4mbps premium uncapped package allows 400GB until they throttle.
That's more than enough for me.

I was on the 1meg premium uncapped, I got throttled on 100GB.
