I figure I could take advantage of Telkom's inefficiency by asking them to downgrade my line to 384 or even 192 and hope they'll forget to update my actual speed limit. What are the chances they will mess up?

I know there are loads of people out there with 384 running at 512 speeds, but has anyone downgraded and been left with their previous speed? Please spill the beans. :)

Probably 5%. But If I persist, eventually I will get that.

However! I suspect the chance of having my speeds lowered is an independent 5%... and I wouldn't be following-up on that one.

I just want some evidence, although I figure people will be a bit secretive about it.

I think that if you tell them to downgrade you they will slow you down. The reason people are getting faster speeds is telkom "forgot" to block those users from higher speeds.

Actually, when the telkom techs came to test our line (took aaaaages to get them to install it; they kept telling us it was installed, but it turned out no-one bothered to actually set it up at the exchange), they said they normally set it a little above the purchased speed. I.E. 256k (32kb/s) for a 192kb line.

The adsl technology that they use supports 2mbits per second, and then they scaled it down. Any other speed caps are done with packet shaping, and don't actually have anything to do with the line itself. That's also why the speeds change from day to day; telkom changes it's packet shaping policies - though how or why they do it as they do is a mystery. :P

Good chance you''re speed will also be adjusted along with the monthly billing.

Dont forget the downgrading fee.

I downgraded to 192K ( :( ) in december.
I tried to do it over the phone for a whole month!!! The telkom employees were as usually not of much help. I went to their shop in menlyn, but it was too full on saterdays, so my old man took me to the silverton branch, it's at the other side of the city from me, but they got the job done in almost no time..... Anyway, that was the bad part, here comes the worse part: They downgraded the speed in a jiffy! I got max two days of 512K speed (my previous line speed) after I got it downgraded!

AHH!!!! That's a load of my chest...... :)

Ag no! Please don't let this be the one thing Telkom does properly, even if you have to wait. :(
