Getting Old!!

Personally I'm not worried. I plan to be here 800 years from now. Anti aging research is ongoing, and if you can reach a point where new research comes out faster than you age, you have reached escape velocity.
If not, even with what we have we can extend healthspan quite dramatically. eg. something as simple as TRT/HRT will give you new life. Have 2 friends who started it at around 60, and one is in his best shape in 30 years.
Then we are not even talking about the more advanced stuff. Epitalon, Rapamycin, FOXO4DRI, DSIP, Selegiline, Methylene Blue, Telmisatan to name a few. Yes, I use half of those already. At 37 I'm in the best condition I have ever been and feel great, like I'm only getting started. I don't see a slow down in growth, quite the opposite.

So no, getting old doesn't worry me.

Reading the OP's question and fhd answers, what very clear to me is how much everyone is missing the bigger picture

Your body will wear out, like anything will eventually . At my age the skeleton show a lot of wear and tear; I had a hip replacement recently. Eventually the irreplaceable parts will wear beyond being serviceable, so will organs and brain.

Any person/living thing will come to a point where the biological mechanism fails and life is unsustainable in the organism. The more chemicals you put in, the more the organs must process these and that "uses the organs up" eventually. I am wholly unconvinced consuming additives which do not occur naturally and form part of a proper diet will help in any positive way. To the contrary, I believe it will rather do harm.

At the rate my body deteriorates.....yes I do look after myself, but ageing is unstoppable, I do not foresee living at best for another 15 to 20 years and by then, probably being mostly immobile without lots of help.

A good friend of mine, 72, just got out of hospital having spent 5 weeks in ICU during which time he nearly "crossed over" several times. Had to be bathed and use nappies etc, a complete loss of dignity.. .

It's got me thinking, I don't want to reach that stage of frailty, ever. I'd rather clock out sooner while everything still works and I'm completely indipendant.

How do you guys feel about being a 90 year old **** in a wheelchair whose daily highlight is waiting for the nurse to come change your diaper?? Think it might be fun?

OR is it better to live large now and clock out earlier? You know, stuff like drink lots of alcohol, eat crap and don't exercise etc. I've known people like this who made it to early 60s then boom massive heart attack and gone. No slow torture decline and lingering on way past your usefulness.

Thoughts?

there is no way in hell i'll reach 90 - or even 72.
over the course of the last 3 yrs i've had 2 rounds of cardiac surgery + 4 heart attacks - number4 being the most severe.
blood pressure was averaging 220/140.
at the time i had just arrived by ambulance at 4.30am into the emergency dept - while connected to the ecg monitor, number 4 hit.
i was literally stabbed in the abdomen with a large fat syringe - this prevented me going into cardiac arrest.

cardiologist:
no more smoking
no more alcohol
no more dairy
no more salt
and so the list continued. .

me to cardiologist:
" i see no point of depriving myself of everything i enjoy, simply to squeeze out an extra year or two".

negotiated settlement:
cut smoking by 75%
cut alcohol to weekends only
dairy remains
salt is gone

had a dnr drawn up by my attorney - 2 pager, simple, but comprehensive

Wow. That's a lot to go through, glad that you pulled through all that and still have your wit and intellect very much intact!!!. I think that attitude counts for a lot when life throws unpleasant things at you.

Best bottle of brandy I can afford, and I am pretty sure there is a bullet with my name on it.
A witblitz/brandy/whisky/vodka/cane/enema* would be more than sufficient to end it all.

*insert favourite hardcore alcohol here*

All good and well, but hospital staff are notorious for "forgetting" that this documents exists - because money.

Humans are badly designed. It would be better to know we all drop dead at age X.

It's like saving for retirement, you could retire and drop dead the next day having saved up your old life...wasted.
Then again you could live to 90.
We are suppose to drop dead at 35 but because we are so clever we have figured out how to push that up to 80.
We just haven't figured out how to stop the aging process... if we could then that would be cool.
I don't want to live forever but being able to live 100 + years in comfort would be awesome.

There are many downsides to this though. We can't all live that long, it would be a massive problem for the population.

The other thing is ... if you could live forever (or a really long time). You would basically have to kill yourself to end your life.

What is the easiest and safe way to eradicate yourself if you can't drive yourself into a bridge pillar anymore?
Shooting is not acceptable as I have seen some unsuccessful ones.
