getting onto IRC

and another thing...

Sorry, forgot to paste this earlier:

Code:
[00:47] ->> Attempting to connect to lancre.lagnet.org.za on port 6667
[00:47] ->> Socket Error: 10060 : The attempt to connect timed out (Server)
[00:47] ->> Goto http://www.icechat.net/socket for more Socket Error Information
[00:47] ->> Connection closed from lancre.lagnet.org.za
[00:47] ->> Attempting to re-connect to lancre.lagnet.org.za
[00:47] ->> Waiting 30 second(s) to re-connect - (1 tries)
[00:48] ->> Re-connecting after wait
..that's to LagNet. BlabberNET just sits and doesn't get beyond not resolving my IP to a DNS entry, and irc.quakenet.org (one of the default options with which the program comes) made a brave attempt to connect, but duly spat me out.

lol, the reason why I'd consider mobile connection methods a bad idea for IRC (in particular gprs), many users share the same IP. The max session per IP fills up in next to no time, which results in people getting booted and banned from the server. Not forgetting thoughtless admins and channel ops banning EVERYONE on the IP without understanding the syntax to ban only that user.

Another problem is users timing out all the time, or sitting with a large bill after being in a channel that has alot of activity.

From the error message you pasted, it looks like the problem is their gateway choking on ICMP.

The link given in the error I pasted previously redirects to the MSDN Library for Windows Sockets Error Codes: 10060 is "WSAETIMEDOUT: Connection timed out. A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or the established connection failed because the connected host has failed to respond."

Apn

Hi Conspirator,

I posed the question to our network support contact:
"No the APN do not filters ports. All should be available when using proxy. The port that we connect thru however is 8080"

Regards,

Gerald.

Take a chill pill, then forget the helpdesk. IRC, WOW and Counterstrike are not their specialties.

I would say, either the app (jmirc etc) is not correctly configured, or your connection itself is incorrectly configure.

GTVM: Do some APNs maybe filter some ports?

btw You'll want to use VC for IRC. Better latency + few enough bytes to use R2/meg. I'm getting 3000ms on VM and 350ms on VC.

Well, tonight I've been sitting behind a Macaroni ;) "Premium Combo" router giving me an ADSL feed - and have had exactly zero connection problems ..and I'm making no system/config changes as I move from place to place.

Yes, that is all i can offer you as I have never worked in one myself.

pfft! No, no and NO again! You leave instrument settings the HELL alone, or rather ask primary discovery questions like "were you previously able to connect?", "have you made changes to your phone since being able to connect last time?". I've had the singular joy of letting someone take me through changing what was a perfectly working setup - it took a week to get it BACK to working again.
We hold VASTLY different opinions on this one, but that's not a discussion for me 'n thee to get into …
So you Don't want them to help you with the basic stuff, but with the Hard Core Technical and Difficult stuff? Ok. Noted.

That’s not the idea of a helpdesk/call centre! Get it in your head. It is designed to cater for everyone, on a low (General) level. If they had to have Professionals on Everything, they would had have needed double the amount of employees that would cost them 4 times as much in salaries.

I'm not sure how a Win32 app on my PC not working is connected to a midlet (yes..? Either way, something on an entirely different platform) on an N80 also not working, but do feel free to enlighten me.
And enlighten you, I will. "This could even be your Firewall blocking your IRC client, but I doubt that because you have this problem on your phone using jmirc as well?" If you had a problem say, sending a SMS from your PC, via your phone I could say it could be your firewall doing its work and blocking some traffic of some kind. But, if you had that same problem on your phone, your firewall had nothing to do with it as a phone Usually does not have any kind of "firewalls" and thus your problem lies somewhere else. Same in this case. Your firewall could not be blocking IRC on your PC, because your IRC have the same symptoms when using jmirc on your phone that has no firewall. Enlightened?

The thing is, I don’t see how this would be a problem at Virgin Mobile’s side at all, as I’m connecting so IRC servers as if there is no tomorrow USING VM. I’m declaring your problem a “Freak of Nature:confused:

@GTVM: Thanks for checking.

bdt: The IRC gods have abandoned you. Your best bet is a ritual sacrifice to appease them.
