I'm trying to figure out whether I'm an emotionless monster. A friend showed me a campaign started by someone whose partner committed suicide.

It was obviously meant to be thought provoking, but I was immediately dismissive of it.

I think I have been desensitized by "like this and my son will live" campaigns on facebook. I react similarly to anti-cruelty campaigns that use abused animals to stop abuse.

Granted i'm not the target audience...

How do you all react to this method of "message" sharing

I also loathe it. There was a Facebook campaign for a child who eventually died, and then the parents seemed to springboard it into a self-promotion fest. I found it totally out of taste and I got turned off anything like that.

I was never sensitised to them in the first place. Can't quite figure out the point. But a few people get some sort of satisfaction out of liking them or doing whatever the campaign asks.

Oh and wb Drew. We missed you! :p

Slightly off topic, I could never understand the huge campaigns launched by the parents of missing children like Madeleine McCann. It seems to be a business in and of itself!

Granted, I have no idea how I would react if my child went missing, but they were incredible in the sense that within days of Madeleine's disappearance, their website was up and running and the (apparent) PR machine started operating; even to this day they sell t-shirts, wrist bands and holiday packs (unfortunate name if you ask me!) ... http://www.findmadeleine.com/home.html

I felt all warm and fuzzy for a second and you ruined it ninja'd -

Cerebus kind of sums up my feelings - people personlise it to such an extent that it seems the campaign is more to popularise themselves more than bring light to the issue.

Some don't- I remember that guy who's shack was burned down n he lost a motorbike if I remember correctly... or the money burnt.

And they went and bought him another one - that was freaking heartwarming-

But there was no emotional blackmail involved

None of these campaigns would stop people from doing it. It's not like a pedophile goes "Oh no, what I was doing is wrong, look at this poor kid that was raped and molested for years" and then changes his ways magically.

It's more of a "trying to shock the money out of your pocket into ours" factor.

Your effort would be better served actively doing something than trying to create awareness everyone is sick of being aware of already.

Batman didn't go and create awareness of crime in Gotham, he just got out there and DID something. Anyone can be Batman. Those who go on the awareness rampage are usually just looking to score some money for their "effort" or feel God will punish them if they don't forward it to their 10 friends

My niece got raped a few years back and eventually died. You will like this and make it your status if you are against rape. You will ignore it if you don't.

^^
I hate that kind of ****.

Emotional blackmail never takes into account that we are desensitized to the nth degree because of the violent society in which we live.

At one time awareness campaigns could stand out because there simply weren't that many of them. They might even have been for something that was genuinely serious and a common risk. They could even have been based exclusively on facts. But over time they've exploded to the point where there is someone trying to create awareness and scare everyone over even extremely remote dangers and exceedingly rare diseases. On top of that they brazenly repeat false information. With today's campaigns and the ones from my youth that I know were based on false information I am always left wondering whether the campaigners are liars or just couldn't be bothered to even do some research.
