Getting your Smart ID at a bank

So I happen to spend this morning at home affairs in Wynberg (CT) getting my eldest her first ID. (she recently turned 16)
- arrived at 06:00 (the queue extended into the basement parking where we stood for a looooooooong time)
- made it inside at 10:04
- all done and left at just before 11:00

The HA staff were incredible - professional, friendly and working under tremendous pressure considering the sheer number of people waiting to helped.

I asked the lady who assisted us if as a non-SA Citizen / permanent resident I could apply for a card (which to me is much more convenient than carrying a booklet everywhere).

Turns out they have just started a new process validating permanent residents (they need the original certificate) and once you receive the SMS that confirms your validation status, you can email [email protected] to request a card.

Fortunately i came prepared and had everything with me so will confirm here if/once my permanent residency is validated and if they approve application for a smart card ;-)

Glad DHA doing something about allowing naturalised citizens and permanent residents to get ID cards.

There is a restriction in the online Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS) that limits bank branch appointments to people with online profiles.
Naturalised citizens and permanent residents can't currently create DHA online profiles.
Naturalised citizens and permanent residents can still use BABS, but are limited to DHA offices.

Bank offices are strictly by appointment and thus queues are short.
BABS appointments at DHA offices are a guide and queues are long.

I went thru this last year when trying to renew my ZA passport.
Went to the DHA office in Alberton about 6 times - very time consuming - I'm still in therapy.

So why are people still using banks where you need to wait weeks or months to even get an appointment slot?

Did mine at Randburg. Make an appointment on the dha website. Babs I think it’s called.

Make sure you choose the earliest morning slots that way you get helped quickly.

Even though they say they allow walk-ins, they will not help you without an appointment. So better book.

Passport will be out within a work.

Did mine at the bank and still not ready after 5 weeks.

Don’t you think LinkedIn is a bit **** then? Or at least their underlying verification platform is.

I’ve used it just fine on quite a few.

Shame.

The bank is a 20 min process and you know up front what time to be there.

No waiting from 6 in the morning to 10 and wasting your valuable time.

Possibly don’t have the staff to spare.

Remember it’s not the bank’s staff but still Home Affairs on a sort of time share.
 
Took a chance and went to DHA at 12. I was done at 2.30 but the process for your passport is 15mins and the rest of the time is waiting for the guys to come back from lunch.

How long of a wait is it for your passport to be ready?

Mine took about a week in 2022

Please tell me there is a separate queue for collections? I applied for my ID card in Malmesbury because they are quick to get an appointment with, but I chose to collect at Wynberg Home Affairs.

Sounds nice... but I'm still not going to bother.

Yes - collections are in different office upstairs,

Will feed back on experience after we have been back to collect my daughter's ID ;-)
