Geyser Timer

what temp is it set at?
It's the first thing I checked, it's been turned down to about 55c. You can't have it to cold else it promotes the growth of bacteria. Was at 60c last year. I have had it overheat before, they had to replace the element.

maybe the thermostat is faulty then? do you hear a click when you turn the dial up and down? yeah, got mine on 55 aswell.

try turning it down to 40 temporarily and see if you can feel a difference in the temp to see if thermostat is working. it takes a good while for the bacteria to be a problem.

Overheating does not damage the element. The replacement elements are crap. It is the el-cheapo thermostats that fail. The older thermostats used to fail OFF. The new ones fail ON, and then rely on a so-called thermal fuse to trip the power. Problem is the element burns out BEFORE the thermal fuse blows .....
It is called technological progress.

Where's a good place to get a blanket? Do they come in different sizes? Standard Kwikot 150.

Thanks.

I found this:
https://www.plumblink.co.za/search?q=blanket

I bought my element and thermostat from Plumblink a couple of weeks ago.

thanks Guys, Yea i have taken a lot of thought into this, the problem is I live in a complex, where the Bodycorprate supplies prepaid electricty at a much higher rate than what the house just outside the fence pays. Our Geysers are also mounted in a stupid way with no insulation. I have Been Monitoring the Usage and tracking the consumption. With the Geyser off, i only Use 1.85KW in 8 Hours, just running my Computer (no gaming) and the fridge. Turning the Geyser on Uses 5.8KW in 2 Hours, this is enough to make it warm enough for a shower, and during the day the geyser is still hot enough for normal usage. I left it on overnight, and the usage over 8hours of night was 15.8 KW( i assume heatup and then temperature maintenance). I know its stupid, many people in the complex have Complained to the Body Corporate, and they have done "investigations" and the usage is "normal". There is even claims that the prepaid meters are incorrectly calibrated to count More KW to keep the BC and associated people pockets lined. Its a Normal 150L quickot Geyser. - Its a game and spending R500 or so to save a bit, is worth it.

I'm sure they installed a Kwikot Geyser and you just made a spelling error in your post.
Kwikot is one of the leading geyser brands in the country so no, it wasn't some Fong Kong brand.

As far as I know (being in the insurance industry for geyser replacements) these are the major 4 brands in SA
  1. Kwikot
  2. Heattech
  3. Duratherm
  4. GAP
Most, if not all developers use geysers from the list above.

Are you in a Balwin development, as I know they are fond of charging more per unit of electricity?

Got mine from Built It, I have placed it on top of the geyser haven’t secured it in place. Will it make much of a difference? Cant image so...
it needs to be completely sealed, wherever air touches it. its like only covering your potatoe half with foil before you bake it won't work.

The effectiveness of the blanket depends entirely on the quality of the geyser and its rating. Older geysers were not particularly well insulated, so the blankets had more of an effect.

The way to tell if the blanket will help, wait for the geyser to be at temperature and feel the outside of the geyser. If it is hot to the touch, the blanket will help. If not, then the insulation is good and the blanket will not help much. The test works best in winter when the ambient temperature in the roof is the lowest.

Pipes are these days a bigger source of heat loss. Check the rating of the geyser, as far as I know, it is now obligatory for the suppliers to rate their geysers and provide a suitable sticker

even slightly warm is an indicator of heat loss. agree that pipes are also a factor. you have to run your tap for a minute before the hot water comes out. obviously, the distance of the geyser to the tap is also a factor.

40 is going to be to low your skin wont like it.

Do you own or rent?

as for the rest the argument if a timer saves you money or not will go on forever.
what i have learned is it only helps if you shift your usage pattern to work around it.
