Geysers ... why make them so hot?

Wasn't there an issue about the temperature and bacteria as well (?)

According to the SA Institute of Electrical Engineers' magazine "Watt Now" March 2008, page 23.. "Do not set your geyser thermostat too low, however. Setting it at 55 C or more will avoid conditions conducive to Legionare's disease".
 
Legionella will grow in water at temperatures from 20 °C to 50 °C (68 °F to 122 °F). However, the bacteria reproduce at the greatest rate in stagnant water at temperatures of 35 °C to 46 °C (95 °F to 115 °F).

Temperature affects the survival of Legionellae as follows:[24]

70 to 80 °C (158 to 176 °F): Disinfection range
At 66 °C (151 °F): Legionellae die within 2 minutes
At 60 °C (140 °F): Legionellae die within 32 minutes
At 55 °C (131 °F): Legionellae die within 5 to 6 hours
Above 50 °C (122 °F): They can survive but do not multiply
35 to 46 °C (95 to 115 °F): Ideal growth range
20 to 50 °C (68 to 122 °F): Legionellae growth range
Below 20 °C (68 °F): Legionellae can survive but are dormant

So 60 it is - setting mine down tonite and wrapping a geyser blanket around it as well - want to compare last year's figures to this year...
 
Anyone know why my geyser takes 6-7 hours to heat up again after the hot water is finished after everyone's had a shower in the morning (7am)?

It only gets hot again at 2pm :confused:

Clogged (sediment build up)/old element? or look at wattage on element.

55 degrees was the recommended minimum, but 60 degrees is much safer.

Unless your insulation absolutely sucks the extra 5degrees won't rob you.

Also - If you use 40 degrees and use ALL the water, you'll be reheating more water than if you just used a little water at 60 degrees. So you won't save quite as much as you first might have thought.
 
You won't save much by turning down your geyser, since in the end you want a bath of a certain temperature, whether it is 100% from the geyser or 50% hot and 50% cold water, you still need the same amount of energy to reach that final comfortable temperature.

The only slight savings are from less heat loss around your geyser. But if you have a blanket and a modern geyser, this heat loss has to be very small to pass certification.

I think the "turn down your geyser" idea comes from eskom trying to reduce the length of the load on their power stations.

You can make a much larger dent in your bill by taking short showers and avoiding baths, using energy bulbs and blankets instead of heaters.
 
Had it on 55, but put it on 60 as 55 is too cold.

Especially in winter.

We use one bath for the whole family though.
