I bought my girlfriend a pink Nintendo DS Lite last week and so far she loves it. She has been playing Hotel Dusk and Nintendogs. She likes the intuitive way both games work and generally interacting with device using the touch screen. She's looking forward to trying out the Phoenix Wright games and Animal Crossing, when she is done with Hotel Dusk. I can definitely say this is a good device for less serious gamers and the non-gamer.

Its a great choice for gamers and people new to gaming. I am a hardcore and I love my DS

What is the availability and after sales support like for the DS lite in SA now that Futronic abandoned Nintendo locally? How available are games now - and in the near future?

And then ... what games are the ones to get?

Even when Futronic was around Nintendo in South Africa was non-existent. And theres a lot of Nintendo games available through take2.co.za

You lucky to have a GF that enjoys gaming. If I bought my gf anything remotely game related for her birthday she'd give me a pillow and a finger pointing to the couch for a while :D

I'd tell her it probably isn't the best place to sleep, but if she wants to sleep on the couch I won't try to stop her :)

My girlfriend doesn't like games that require fast reflexes. She did really enjoy the original Doom, but she only plays that on the easiest setting. She has been known to stay up all night playing Baldur's Gate. Overall I figured she should like the DS, but she is liking it more than I anticipated.

my girlfriend only likes sims, scary though is she creates our "future" family :)

What are you after? You won't find the latest flashy graphics, but there are a lot of intriguing games. In Hotel Dusk you hold the DS like a book, and interact with the game using the touch screen. In Nintendogs you can blow soap bubbles for your dog by blowing into the microphone. Of course you also call your dog by name and issue commands like "sit" using the microphone. You pat it on the head using the stylus.

I didn't worry about support. My electronic gadgets almost never go wrong while under warranty and if something does go wrong I'll deal with that when it happens. If local game sources dry up I can arrange to get them from overseas, although I presume Take2 will continue to bring in the games.

My girlfriend loves games, but she does not quite fall into what seems to be the target market of Microsoft and Sony. She's also a very non-technical person and think this is where the unique interface of the DS comes in. I suspect she'd have a lot of fun with the Wii too. And she doesn't care much about graphics, as long as the games are fun.

With regard to Nintendo's presence in the country Futronic were pathetic. When she went into shops asking about games for the GameCube and DS people looked at her like she had just made them up.

Was R1400 from BTGames, but they only had pink. Toys R Us had black and white ones for R1500.

noxibox ... thanks for the info.

I'm an old Nintendo toppie that started playing handhelds when Nintendo started it all in the early 80's - various Donkey Kongs (single and double screens), Mickey Mouse catching eggs, Goofey the Fire Fighter, catching parachutes, spraying greenhouse worms, etc etc etc. I've done them all. I had a Donkey Kong 2 (double screen) that packed-up after many many years this week (the kids killed it - and the wife threw it away). So, I'm looking for a replacement - for the kids naturally :-).

I've been looking at the PSP - but it's just too big. I like the DS lite more - but is a bit concerned about local support and the availability of games etc.

I've still got a working Donkey Kong 2 and Parachute. We had Popeye, Fire and Donkey Kong jnr that all ceased working eventually. I also managed to pick up a couple of non-Nintendo ones that were really good, although I am not sure if those still work.

my wife loves her DS lite too :) hours of puyo pop fever, super mario 64 DS, diddy kong racing, sonic rush and bubble bobble revolution keep her happy :D my 5 year old daughter prefers tony hawk's american sk8land and winx club. she likes to watch me play pac pix but the drawing is a bit too fast for her. we are one happy ds lite family :D

Between Baldur's Gate and the DS Lite I may never see my girlfriend again :)

For me Nintendo is about having fun. Their games are not trying to be "real" and serious. I play games on PC that simulates reality (campaigns) - but on a handheld I want to have fun and something "non-campaignish" - even humorous - something that one can take up for a few minutes here and there. Nintendo got this recipe right from day one.

stupid is what stupid says

psp is better :P

but ill give a fair comment one day when I have tried the DS and DS lite

I too have never tried the DS, but hey, I've never tried a Burger King but absolutely know that McDonalds is better. The same applies with Pepsi and Coke (love Coke) and the PS3 (what a bunch of **** that is even though I've never played on it, or a Xbox360 or Wii but I just know it's crap because I know)

Okay, truthfully, I know for a fact that Kevinswan is clueless commentator. Fact.

I have never tried the PSP. What I did do was go through lists of games for both systems, look at the types of games and decide which had games I thought she would actually play. The PSP didn't look promising and lacked the possibilities offered by the DS.
