I ordered an ADSL line in advance in November '03 as I bought a new house and was to move into it in December'03. They told me that it would be installed mid-December.

By end December they told me it would be in by Mid-Jan '04. Come mid-Jan they said they are receiving large volumes of orders as my area is rapidly developing, I need to remain patient (tap-tap). By the end of Feb they said they need to upgrade the lines, but will only do this after June, as it it not in their financial year's budget (I presume the budget year ends in June). Come June they say it will be ready by 17 July. Come 17 July they say they are still busy upgrading the lines, it will be ready by end-October.

A Telkom employee calls me end-October to say he is going to cancel my order as their system is overloaded and cannot handle all the orders. He says he will re-apply on my behalf immediately.

I called in early November to confirm that he has re-applied, and they say (obviously) that he hasn't, and... are you ready fot this... I cannot have ADSL since I am 7,2km from the nearest exchange, and there is no hope of getting ADSL in the near future, unless they build a new exchange.

This after waiting 'patiently' for on whole year to get my ADSL. So I ask them if they couldn't have told me a year ago, when I placed my order, that I was too far away - reply: "O, so sorry, I can't answer you on that question.".

I really don't have sufficient clean words to describe my frustration with Telkom and will go to any alternative telecom provider once they arrive. I am depressed all over again after writing this message :(

Telkom sucks! Sorry to hear of your frustrations! Any of the wireless service providers doing business in your area?

Cheers
Ant

Unbelievable (and yet believable). They always say when buying a house it's "location, location, location". I guess this is true if you want ADSL - make sure you buy your house near your local Telkom exchange.

Telkoms sucks, I orderd asld in Feb and only got it last sunday,

I've said this before, but I am around 8km from my local exchange and a little pushing got them to install my line, it depends on the quiality of the line from your house to the exchange. distance is just an average. I get really good speeds as well. Phone them back and complain and dont stop until you feel better about yourself.

Wireless

Sentech doesn't cover my area - and after reading abouth their 24month contract I do't really want to sign up anyway. Are there any other wireless providers?

VQuest - question

Who did you talk to to find out what the quality of the line is? I called Telkom again and spoke to another dumb operator that transfered my to 10 minutes of panflute. Then the line went dead. Please help.

You could consider:
Other Broadband Services/iBurst, or look at www.iBurst.co.za, but beware iBurst only launches officially in April 2005, and is a tad unstable in its pre-launch phase :)

Added: I forgot about Vodacom's 3GOne which may or may not be launched today, terms & conditions apply...blah...Discussion on MyBroadband.co.za about Vodacom's 3G

And then Telkom bigshots sit in the offices asking "I wonder why people hate us enough to start up anti-telkom websites?" The problem with Telkom is that the company has built itself on poor customer service. Even if there is competition it will take years to correct the poor management and get staff up to a decent level.

The company I work for does a lot of work with Telkom (forgive us but it pays the bills), we took 2 staff members on from the retrenchments - trying to help to poor people that Telkom dropped in the gutter. Its been almost a year now and they still think customer service means opening outlook once a month. Although this is a huge improvement from when they arrived. ;)

The point is that even by removing these staff members, it still takes a long time to get the bad work habits out of them. Granted they were both with Telkom for nearly 10 years.

(BTW: We interviewed roughly 500 people to arrive with the "best". We were planning to hire ten staff members. Could just not find any. Interviews lasted 6 months and were conducted across the country, most interviews ended within 5 minutes for various reasons including... inability to speak english, Most of them shared 2 Primary concerns: "Will I get a free house" and "What are my lunch hours")

ROFL :D

Seriously shocking, but oh so funny!

I'll probably get flamed for this, but after they left the employ of Telkom, it was up to those 2 people to improve themselves- if they fail to do so and continue to act like they still work for Telkom, give them written warnings, hold a disciplinary hearing, send them on training courses, if all that fails- sack their asses!

Failing to pull oneself out of a rut of bad manerisms & blaming it on someone else, is like the ANC still blaming apartheid for the lack of housing today & non-delivery of services to the people!
