Do isp's charge in Gibibytes or Gigabytes? The former being 1024 Mib and the latter being 1000 mb.

I understand your reason for asking, but they charge in GB not GiB. However, in this instance I believe that 1 GB = 1 GiB, or rather they're synonyms of eachother.

Vodacom and iBurst charge in megabytes, and proper ISPs charge in Gigs.

Overseas ISP's charge per speed, which it should be.

Actually damnit, this is a good question. How does an ISP define a GB?

Is it 1024^3 bytes or 1000^3 bytes?

Currently the ISPs define a gigabyte as 1024^3. Hope they don't see this thread and get any ideas...

LOL, just wanted to be sure. Seeing as MTN charge you xx rand for 1 gigabyte 1000mb and not 1024 mib.

my Vodacom usage says x/2000mb used

hmmm I wonder if they define a megabyte as 1000, or 1024 kilobytes :p

My ex ISP was ZAZU. now they just charge a bit too high compared to others. But they had brilliant service. Anyways this is quoted from their FAQ site of how much 4Gigabytes really is and this is what i received from my 3GB package:

"The proper defintion of a Gigabyte according to international standards is one thousand million bytes (3 000 000 000). A Megabyte is one million bytes (1 000 000) and a kilobyte (1 000). However, in computer terms, it has become common to refer to a kilobyte as 1024 bytes, a Megabyte as 1024x1024 (1 048 576) bytes and a Gigabyte as 1024x1024*1024 (1 073 741 824) bytes. Telkom has chosen to use the latter definition for a GigaByte. Your 3 Gigabyte cap is therefore 3 221 225 472 bytes. (Thats over 200Megabytes more than 'proper' 3 Gigabytes). In fact, there is a proper name for the Gigabyte as we have defined it, and its called a 'Gibibyte' (also Mebibyte and kibibyte). However since virtually nobody uses this term, or have even heard of it, we stick to 'Gigabytes'. "

So i received 3221Mb each month from them which was a good thing.

i'm almost sure the guys who we also pay for the voice line, used to work in giB. memory is foggy, but i remember reading something on their site about how you score a bit because they calculate in giB.
now they seem to have switched over to gB

For the sake of correctness, thse g's should be capitalised, ie GiB and GB :)
