Gig photo's

So I'm going to try and shoot a gig now. Zebra & Giraffe and van Coke Kartel. This shoult turn out interesting. I built myself a DIY grid spot so we'll see how/what I can get out of this

Do any of you guys have photo's you'ev taken at Tanz Cafe in Johannesburg?

I'm think of creating of a group on Flickr and if there's enough photo's floating around, have them added.

I'm packing the 300 f/2.8 again for the James Blunt show here on Sunday. :o

Do you shoot everything at 2.8 at concerts?
Also - how many shots are crisp?

I can take 500 and get a handful ... is that normal? I find the if the person is under red light, it's more difficult to get a clear shot too.

PS Tried my NR yesterday at a concert, but haven't edited as yet. So I'll see tonight

How I shoot depends on the night. For these big shows they generally only allow media for the first 2-3 songs so I shoot until the buffer is full, switch cameras, then repeat. Take enough shots and some are bound to come out clean. :) If I've got the whole show to shoot I'm much more selective and deliberate so my keeper rate is higher. I had full access for the Neil Diamond concert but I've got a feeling I might get stuck in the pit for Blunt.

If I have to shoot f/2.8 I will but I favour f/4. I might also pack the 50mm f/1.4 on a 400D - haven't decided on that yet. I also shoot RAW for concerts (well M-RAW on the 7D) so I can sort the constantly changing lighting out afterwards.
 
I tried RAW last night and - um - realise I need a new card or use one the smaller RAW images!

Another question on (generally) noise : they speak about pixel density because a cause of noise ... too high a MP on a small sensor. What if I set to 10MP - which is more than adequite - would I get less noise at a given ISO?

You'd still have the same pixel density on the sensor so nothing would change. You can achieve the same "apparent" noise reduction by downsampling in PS.

What size card are you currently using?
 
I thought 8GB would be sufficient ...

In fairness, I never thought I'd ever use RAW as it's for real photographers ;) But I realise that even beginners like me use it *sigh*
 
bwana, do you use the hood on the 300mm for gigs? I've never seen one of these lenses close up, but it looks big.

I really hate the pit. I just had access to one for the first time, and it really sucks. Never mind having to wrestle with aggressive a-hole press types, I don't like the angle. I get far better results standing in the crowd, even if it's further back. Most of my Green Man shots from last year were from at least 20m back.

IMHO RAW is essential for these gigs. I can do much more to save images from bad light with RAW than JPEG - maybe that's just my lack of skill :o

I will say this: After this weekend I'm in love with the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM II

No, the camera just down-samples the output. You may seen less noise but that's just because there are fewer pixels.

RAW vs JPG - both have their uses. In my field it's the pro's that use jpg - not the other way around. The real trick is getting it right in camera when you're shooting jpg. ;)

Yeah, hood for protection and flare.

We're all friends in the pits - everyone there has a job to do and we respect that. It's generally the new guys, or the ones that wrangled a pass from a friend of a friend, who get in everyones way.

The 70-200 f/2.8 II is a nice lens. ;)

I found it to be the opposite. It was very obvious that the two or three a-holes were seasoned guys who know their way around and just didn't care to step in front of someone and bring a tripod (yes! a tripod!) into the pit.

I expected it to be marginally better than the old 70-200mm f/2.8 (non IS) but the difference is more pronounced than I expected. Which is quite something because the old one already made my drool all over myself.

Nice bwana!

I've probably asked you before - but do you take a smaller lens to shows as well?

I'm going to try my 28mm 2.8 at the next show - but I've seen a used 28mm 1.8 for R3,000.00 on ODP as wel. I have zero money now, but perhaps if it's available next month ....
