Gigaba defends Eskom price hike application

Neccesary because the government (who owns Eskom) cannot plan ahead. Should have saved money over a long period of time to pay for the new upgrades. Similar to how it is supposed to work with roads ...

So when will they actually start doing something about the fact that for the last 20 years they have done absolutely nothing. Government keeps saying that Electricity is a vital part of living, and they give it away, but by making it so damn expensive, they are making it a luxury!!

They keep moaning about job creating, but this is not going to create jobs, but cause business to close down!!

So tired of this ****.

Eskom’s application for a 16-percent price hike over five years is vital to cushion the economy against a shock of a sudden tariff rise, Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba said on Tuesday.

Oh .. like the last one the ANC incompetents gave us?

Love how he says its necessary, but the only reasoning being to not impair the build process.

I still want to know what fekking knobjockey thinks its ok to pay off a bloody large infrastructure build in anything less than 20 years ffs.

Don't forget that its also about cost-reflective tariffs.

I wouldn't waste my energy complaining about this because MYPD4 and 5 are inevitable and its not gonna be pretty. We all need to buckle up. Its going to be a rough ride.

Cost reflective Tariffs?

I don't for a second believe the costs they're putting forward are accurate, and I don't know anyone who is paying that little for electricity in the residential sector anyway.

As for not wasting my time, well as far as I'm concerned MYPD4 & 5 are not signed and sealed yet, therefore I can do my bit to alter them.

The increase will probably cause more strikes, increased prices of groceries, increased costs to businesses, more people losing jobs, more people complaining to government. How can he defend all of that?

Why doesn't Eskom let people sell their own energy into the energy grid? I heard some first world countries do this. Wouldn't this reduce the cost or at least reduce the electricity hikes?

These anc morons are useless. If you vote anc then you too are a useless moron.
I'd rather put up with the aussies...

build program my arse. This is to repay their debt. What is it now? R350bil? +-? lecherous sobs will never get it right. Sickening

I loath the ANC. I really do. They insist on having their mitts in every pie and everything they touch turns to ****. SABC, SAA, Telkom, Eskom, etc.. etc.. All in debt or declining greatly in value... Bailouts all the time. Each and every ****ing day it seems there is another failure they created and are never shy to throw taxpayer's money at. And so much corruption. Greed sodding greed rules supreme. Bling! More bling! Bling is of prime importance!

WTF is this? Is this how people are meant to live? I feel as if the taxes I contribute is being used to wipe somebody's arse with gold leaf. Seriously... **** them.

Edit: Sorry I felt the need to rant.

They have increased prices for the last 4-5 years (double digits).. is it not enough? DIE ANC!!

Gigaba said changes to the inclining block tariff (IBT) were also contained in the Eskom proposal, to guard against unintended consequences for the poor.

The middle class will yet again support the poor.
Time for a reality check: The middle class are becoming poorer. When they cannot afford to pay for electricity then who is going to subsidize the "poor"?

Eskom price hike application “necessary” – Gigaba
Yeah, "necessary" to kill SA manufacturing.
SA already has some of the most expensive electricity in the world.
With these "necessary" increases, we will be the number one most expensive.

The R350b is just plain ridiculous.
Eskom, Telkom, SAA, SANRAL - what do they have in common?

Time to "get off the grid".
They will get zero and the prices will rise further for those that are left.

Q. The proposed changes to IBT - will it force CoJ/CityPower to use "telescopic" rates for pre-paid?
(CoJ/CityPower charge all units at the highest rate)

We have limited resources ito water and electricity;

Say you have a well point for watering your garden (to save the precious water resources); but you need to run a pump to get it; this costs electricity; and it gets damn expensive to do that with the cost of electricity what it is

Should the price for electricity used for running a well point (or any other resource saving mechanism) not be much lower due to the fact that you are saving on another resource (water) in the process?

there is just no getting ahead in this country while the middle class foots the bill for everything...
