Gigabyte CD/DVD rom

I'm not every on the ball with hardware and I've been having issues with my CD/DVD ROM. It's a read only Gigabyte ROM about a year old. When i put a CD in, it reads fine without problems. Any DVDs that i put in, however it has issues with them. As soon as i try to copy or open any files on the dvd it makes a strange noise and basically freezes up, not allowing me access to the files. Occasionally rebooting helps as well as changing the dvd to a CD but this is short lived. Any ideas? Buy a new one?

What Operating System? Do you have any other CD DVD software installed? What software are you trying to use for the copy?

Try flashing it (drive) perhaps?

Using windows XP. No other software installed. Just trying to access it through Windows explorer or whatever and copy it via that.
