Looking to turn my old PC into a media center, came across "gt ptv rh gb1"; anybody got any experience with this card?

I'm using Hardy.

:(:(

All by myself
Dont wanna be
All by myself anymore
All by myself
Dont wanna live
All by myself anymore

Hard to be sure
Some times I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure

All by myself
Dont wanna be
All by myself anymore
All by myself
Dont wanna live
All by myself anymore

:(:(

No experience, but if it's a hardware mpeg card then see if the chip is supported.

Trying to find out, but can't seem to get a definitive answer, and I was looking at buying tomorrow. In a perfect world someone here has got the card.

(btw- i was going to run a whole "lonely"/"by myself" theme and you just stopped it. Now you'll never get the lyrics to "Lonely".)

LOL I think "all by myself" was more than enough thanks ;)

paddy, that looks like a stock code of some company, and not a specific gigabyte part number so unless someone here works for that company we wont be able to tell you anything about the card in particular, hence the silence

I wont be putting a TV signal though, more general media; yours seems to be a different model, but I doubt any fundamental changes from a OS point of view.

Whats you opinion of the card, and how well does it work with the OS?

Never had any problems with it. Used it with tvtime and xdtv, but then this so that I can watch TV on my desktop while I work.
IMO the OEM supplied Windows app was inferior in comparison (resolution, deinterlacer options, widescreen support) and I could never get a 64 bit driver for it. To be fair, the free dscaler app for Windows was also way superior to the OEM app.

For a media box you'd probably want to use mythtv though, and I'm uncertain if this card is supported by mythtv.

In essence all I want to divx, avi, mp3 etc etc from the pc to the tv, and apparently I can't just go VGA to RCA without this card.

if you won't be running your TV through the box then the TV card is irrelevant. My suspicion is that that card is a software encoder. That being said I setup mythtv before using a WinFast TV2000XP card which is also a software encoder card. And Linux is very kind to software encoders as opposed to Windows.

So if I want to to output to a tv rather than a monitor, any card will do? All I have on the back of the CPU is a standard VGA plug.

I output from my mythtv to my CRT TV using my nVidia GeForce FX5200. It's the videocard that matters. I also don't use my TV card on my mythtv box.

The CPU I'll be using only has the SIS onboard gfx card (sis 661), and as I say, only VGA out. If there's a way of doing it without buying another card, I'll be happy (ie: VGA to RCA).

afaik tv cards receive a signal and don't output it. Oh well let me say between the Hauppauge PVR-500 and the WinFast TV2000XP that has been my experience. So my guess is that unless you have a VGA to RCA or RF connector (which I believe doesn't exist), then you need a videocard. Phone a shop called Zakspeed to find out if a VGA to RCA/RF is possible. They are based in Jhb and CPT.

if you are going to go with an older card, I would recommend finding an nVidia card as setting one up has always seemed to be easier given what i have seen on forums. that's just my perception though.

I just mentioned the radeon because they are normally cheaper but yeah go with nvidia if possible.
