OK - so my neighbor wants a laptop and he's looking at the W511AS Gigabyte for R13420.

Personally never heard of it and cant find much more about it than the specs:

GIGABYTE® W511AS Notebook -
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 740 (1.73GHz, 2MB Cache),
1GB DDR (2x 512MB) ,
80GB 5400RPM HDD,
WiFi LAN
DVD-Super Multi,
15.4" Wide Screen Ultra Bright TFT LCD,
128MB ATI Radeon Mobility X700 ,
LAN,
Modem,
Windows XP Pro,
1 Year Warranty Includes Bluetooth Built-In, S-Video TV-Out Support, 3-In-1 Card Reader, IR Remote Control, Instant-ON Mode For DVD/CD/Music/Photo

Your thoughts and other recommendations would be welcomed.

im sure you can get an acer or hp for alot cheaper

that seems expensive

if he doesnt want to game that isnt a good option

gigabyte is expensive i think with laptops

i mean i sold a laptop 1.7 60 512 meg 15" windows xp pro

7499.00 ex vat thought

now i doubt an extra 20 gig 512 meg ram and bluetooth is worth an additional 7k

but ask person im sure if that is an expensive price

I have only sold 3 of the above notebooks and never really spent more than 30mins working on them. Form the time I spent working on the notebooks I was not impressed. Rectron bring them into the country but offer no support for the gigabyte products, everything has to be send back to gigabyte for repair. The notebook its self looks nice but that’s where the praise stops, it seems a bit slow and the LCD is not great. It also only has a 5200RPM drive so the 1.7P4m seems pointless. They are also over priced because there is only one reseller.

At that price range with the same Graphics card the Acer would be a much better buy.

Acer TravelMate 4102WLMi, Centrino, Pentium M 740 (1.7Ghz), 15.4" WXGA, ATI X700, DVD-Dual double layer, 60GB7200RPM, DDRII 512MB, 8 cell,10/100 and wireless, 1394, s-video, WinXP Pro R10367.08 incl

Acer TravelMate 4062LCi, Centrino, Pentium M 740 (1.7Ghz), 15.0" XGA, 64MB shared VRAM, DVD-CDRW, 60GB7200RPM, DDRII 512MB, 8 cell, 10/100 & wireless, no 1394, no s-video, no FIR, no recovery CD, WinXP Pro R7927.48 incl

Another 512Mb stick your looking at +- R400

My mate has got one, he seems to be happy with it. He even brings it to LANs and it performs nicely for a laptop. He even beats me:(
lol

Gigabyte CA2

@Person or anyone that can help with the problem below.

I bought a CA2 Gigabyte Cube for my daughter last year.
I think I made the mistake of putting a 200GB Seagate Hdd in it?
I say this, because the Bios has problems seeing this size partition.
Anyway I then partitioned it into two equal drives, thinking this may help.
It helped in the sense that the Bios detected the drive correctly.
But the Boot Order is a mess.
The CA2 insists on trying to boot from the ROM of the Card reader, despite attempts at deselecting it in the Bios.
I have tried everything.

You have to try several times before the Hdd is booted into windows and then it is fine. Just don't switch the thing off.
Gigabyte's site has no updated bios for this set-up nor a FAQ or workaround.
Short of changing the hdd, this one has stumped me.
Believe me, several people have attempted to fix the boot order, to no avail.
Grr.

Why thank you Person.
I might take you up on that offer. :)
Will PM if I do.

My daughter is in her last year of school and does Computer Studies as a subject so I must get it working properly ASAP.

Sorry. That came across as abrupt.
That was not my intention.:)

Thanks for the help.

My biggest criteria on a notebook?

Where the goddamn ctrl and Fn keys are, all manufacturers that put the Fn as the outer button should DIE IN A FIRE!!!!

I step away for a little while and find my thread's been jacked - by a mod!

Thanks for the alternatives Person - I'll let him know. And also for the replies Killadoob & rburley :D

My wife has one of those Gigabyte W511A laptops and it works very well. Her main issue is that the LAN cable connection is near the middle on the right hand side, so gets in the way of the mouse. One concern I have is that I tried to get a spare power supply for her from Rectron, but they have been unable to get one for me for about six months now, which has me a bit concerned about parts availability for the laptop in general.

There is a review of the laptop on Toms Hardware as well.
