Hey guys.

Simple question ...
I am a photoshop veteran but tired of paying for a new copy of photoshop as Adobe`s prices just seems to go up with every release.
Considering moving to GIMP (the opensource version of photoshop) .
Does GIMP have the same capability etc as photoshop.
Whats the pros vs cons ?

Also like to know.
I suppose gimp has less features.
My daughter is doing graphic design next year and they also said she must get photoshop.

Well I use GIMP but I am going to download the trial version of CS4 tomorrow probably and give that a spin.

Its as close as you will get to PS without the price and feature wise it fares well, although certain things are lacking as far as I know (considering I have never used PS). Rather ask this question in the photography section as you will get better responses there. Depending on how advanced of a user you are, GIMP should do. If you are really pushing those pixels hard though I think you may prefer keeping to PS, but for me, GIMP does the trick. And its free. Almost all my latest pics are edited with GIMP (as you can see in the link from my sig), and personally, I would recommend it if you dont wanna cough up, and dont need the really fine features of PS.

GIMP has more features than paint and is twice as confusing as PS. Seriously it's interface is horrible... There's an app called "Pixel" which is pretty much a PS clone but cheaper (not free). What about PS Elements?

GIMP is very good, and it's free as well :)

I have been able to follow just about every Photoshop tutorial out there on GIMP and often get features which Photoshop doesn't support.

Take a look @ GIMPShop for an interface that looks like the Photoshop one.

Do you need to upgrade each time they release a new version? I usually skip a release or two.

As a photographer I think PS wins hands down - as a graphic designer the playing field is a bit more level.

I prefer photoshop. I'd rather make a plan to get the money than use GIMP. Or look into the billions of online editors, maybe one of them will fulfill your needs. a.viary.com etc. Or like bwana said, skip a release now and then. The jump is usually not that big of a showstopper.

Gimp is opensource Photoshop the same way that a Citi Golf is a opensource Lamborghini. If you're are very familiar with Photoshop will get frustrated with the tools, atleast I did. That's not to say it isn't a bad program, it's just not Photoshop. If paths aren't too important to you I'd suggest you try Paint.net too.
