Since I have been using your programme, I have been billed a HUGE amount pm.
They say I have been using a different APN.
I now owe R1200.00 on my R219.00 PM account.
I don't know what APN means.
What is your suggestion?

Simply put, an APN, or Access point Name, is the name used to identify a GPRS bearer service on the GSM network.

Different APNs can have different configurations like IP ranges (private or public), firewall setup (blocked ports or unrestricted), different proxy configurations, different billing, etc.

For example there are the general purpose APNs like 'internet' and 'MyMTN' which typically allow you to go anywhere, but have restricted incoming connections. Vodacom have an 'unrestricted' APN which gives you a routeable IP address and doesn't block any incoming connections, MTN have 'MTNVPN' which is similar. There are also APNs for other services like MMS and Vlive! which only allow access to the relevant gateways. There are also corporate APNs which do not allow access to the internet, but only to the corporations private network.

MTN's 'internet' and 'MyMTN' APNs are functionally equivalent, in fact, I'm sure one of the reps has even posted here that one is an alias of the other. So you get billed the same and they perform they same, it does not matter which one you use.

It is strange that you are seeing both on your bill though, how sure are you that your SIM is staying inside your modem? Is it possible that someone is using your SIM in another device when you are not around?

I sometimes use my cellphone as a modem when my fastlink won't connect. It then says "Internet" and my fastlink says "MyMtn". Or when I use the sim to check my email on the phone at work.

afaik all ginngs' app does is use your ALREADY created "internet shortcut", and when connected, has a few extra options like support for USSD commands.

even Vodafone's VMC software uses a shortcut.

Boy can i related im beyond *** with mtn they need to update their billing on each account on a minute to minute basis .

@ Marco I cannot imagine that your APN should make a difference in billing, but then again who knows with the continuing MTN billing chaos. That is still the root cause of your (and many others) problem I am sure. @ Cosmogirl - minute accurate updates at MTN are as likely as MR T becoming a prima ballerina (especially with those legs). Quarterly billing MTN can just about do, albeit inaccurate. MTN billing/client service/supervisors/managers cannot give me any resolution or even an answer on their serious billing stuff ups. Mudshark is right. It is ithe beginning of the battle with MTN. I have been trying to get my bills corrected now for the fourth month running. My original billing issues from March have STILL not been resolved or even acknowledged. I am still expected to pay the bill though...Right now I do not make use of my MTN contract phones at all...I am too afraid. Yet every month I get charged out of bundle for my usage of months ago. ICASA is the only avenue to try and complain about MTN now...of course we all know that is not likely to do much as they seem to be er "ineffective". None the less I am going to raise a complaint with them concerning the MTN billing debacle, and the lack of attention and downright contempt MTN has been displaying to their customers in this regard. I am following the protocol to lodge an ICASA complaint dilligently. I suggest you any everyone else do the same. The sheer volume of MTN complaints I have witnessed on (the largely ineffective as far as MTN goes) Hello Peter means something is really horribly wrong. MTN needs to take action, look after their customers or they NEED to be FORCED to do so (but ICASA is toothless ay). I just do not pay my bill now - waiting to get cut off. I am sure this part of their billing system is fully operational and devastatingly efficient and someone will smugly inform me of pending legal action for debt collection in record time. Maybe then I can get someone from MTN to actually listen and DO something. In all honesty MTN is not worthy of that 2010 official sponsorship logo. They are incorrigible in their arrogant and non existent customer relations. Stay away from them everyone. I wish I could do that now. If they would help I would have changed my mind...but that is not happening. I won't hold my breath either...

OK. will look at ICASA website to lodge a complaint.

I am 1 week into my new bundle and have stacks of MB's left according to Ginggs programme and the USSD. Both correspond. BUT I have been charged R86.00 for going out of bundle for this new period????? and I have 3 weeks left. What will the bill be then?

Last month the first week was ok then was charged for 3 days and then a few days of no charge and then charged again for a few days and so on.

Absolutely no correlation with the bill and my daily balance check.

Let me know of your outcome.

Thanks

Hi marco

I have the same issue. Every month I have data that has rolled over to the new month, yet I get charged for the first 1 or 2 days of the new month on an out of bundle rate. From what I have seen the USSD just doesn't update for a few days when it comes to close of month, so it's pretty unreliable. I've faxed and emailed them on numerous occasions, had problem tickets open, but everything seems to just disappear into a big black hole.

Yes it does not update every day, but when it does, it is correct according to Ginggs programme and my NetMeter. Just the billing does not correspond.

Of cause they cant give you a serious answer when they making tons of money on our mis fortune . Why would they even bother they have over 8millions users . And are rolling in money . Their billing system is very shady . When you on pre paid yr balance is alway up to date .

My contract is now finished thank God. As it is in arrears I still have 1 payment left and that will be a BIG amount so I will stop all payments to MTN until they can explain why I was being charged out of bundle while I still had stacks of MB's left.
Problem is. Will the judge understand all the tech stuff when I get summoned to court?
