Hi,

I picked up 1 of these https://www.syntech.co.za/product/gizzu-100w-46wh-14400mah-mini-poe-dc-ups-black/ at Computer Mania today to keep my ONT and Router on for the duration of loadshedding.

Are these devices supposed to charge while on AC?

When I set it up (plugged my ONT and router in) at 2pm it was on 75%, the electricity was on I expected the device to charge while plugged in, I didn't notice the lights on the UPS was dropping indicating that its discharging even though it's plugged in, it had dropped from 75 down to 25% which I only noticed 15 minutes before loadshedding was scheduled to kick in again.

As soon as loadshedding hit, the UPS lasted about 10 minutes and is now completely dead.

Does this mean the UPS is faulty?

Or (which I hope not) do I have to keep it charged and switch between the UPS and normal when the electricity goes out? Which would defeat the whole Uninterrupted part tbh

They are definitely supposed to charge while devices are plugged in.They are inline and always on. sounds like you got a lemon
Stupid question but you did plug the UPS into AC power right?

I did yeah, as soon as I unpacked it and plugged my ONT and Router in, I plugged it into the wall with the expectation that it would charge up while the electricity is on so when the next batch of loadshedding hits, It's fully charged.

My Ratel looks identical so sure its just a label . We had lovely evening. Power went off at 18.00 and only came on at 3 this morning. Ratel still had 25% power left at that stage.
Definitely something amiss on your unit

The Ratel, Gizzu and Netogy all come from the same factory.

And I agree, sounds like a faulty unit.

Thanks all, I'm waiting for them to open now at 9am to take it back, I'm hoping they still have stock to replace my faulty unit.

Had it plugged in the entire night, without my ONT and Router, switched on this morning and it was still dead.

Maybe the power supply is faulty. Can you hear a hum/buzz if you put your ear to it?

To the ups gurus.. If my ups is 18w..left on 24/7..how must does it cost to power on a monthly basis(trying to figure out if it's worth it to unplug it where there is not loadshedding)also if there any negative wrt leaving it on the whole time from a battery point of view.. Thx in advance

Very silly question - did you switch it on?
So with mine - if I plug it in but don't switch it on, it'll power the ONT and all that but will discharge. Once I switch it on and it's plugged in and there's electricity, it'll charge.
Or I'm going crazy.

OR even checked if the power cord is pushed in all the way in the back of the unit. Seen it many times on new stuff the the power cord fitting is a bit tight and then if you not pushing it in properly, it does not make contact

Any negative effect on the batteries?
The whole purpose of them is to leave them connected so your stuff stays on when there is a power failure. You are not using any more power using a UPS vs using the routers power supplies.

I was going to ask the same question. But I think it works the other way around, well at least with the mini UPS I have.

Yeah I couldn't quite remember which way it worked but I know switching it on/ off did something, wasn't as simple as just plug it in.

Well it's something the OP should look at. Maybe it's just as simple as that. Mine is 'ON' permanently now.

I also got a Gizzu last week, albeit a different model 8800mAh dual dc one. According to the user manual, the UPS starts to charge once it is plugged into an AC source whether the UPS itself is on / off. So the on / off button is only use to control whether the battery discharge to the connected ONT + router, so it was just plug and play for me. One thing of note is that after a low battery cut off on the UPS, the manual recommended the user to restart the UPS once the AC source is back on in order to prevent over-discharge.

Also got this unit recently and thought it was faulty then realized had to switch it on by pressing the power button for 2 sec.

It turns out the cable they provided was faulty, it's the figure 8 type plug.

When I got there and got the new 1, the guy tested it out and it worked the way it was supposed to (switch on, and status light is red, plug AC power in, status light goes green and the charging indicator moves) so we take the old 1 and test it (with the new ups cable) and it works. Immediately I said, it's the cable, so we try with the old cable, and dead!

So he tells me he has to send the entire unit back, for a faulty cable.

I'm back home now, plugged the UPS in to AC, as soon as the electricity came on now at 12:13 it started charging up again.

(For an hour running my ONT, Router and charging 2 Samsung Tabs from the front USB ports, it hasn't moved down from 75%)
