Canadian workers walk out as GM drops axe

Hundreds of workers walked off the job and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed "deep disappointment" after General Motors on Monday announced the closure of its Oshawa plant, catching governments and employees by surprise.

Canadian officials, briefed on the plan on Sunday, promised to aid those affected by the December 2019 closure, part of a wider restructuring that will halt production of slow-selling models, including the Chevrolet Cruze, and slash GM's North American workforce.

GM said the closure affects 2973 assembly line jobs in the Ontario city, out of the carmaker's Canadian workforce of 8150.

"I spoke with GM (Chief Executive) Mary Barra to express my deep disappointment in the closure," Trudeau tweeted on Monday. "We'll do everything we can to help the families affected by this news get back on their feet."

GM told the provincial government that nothing could be done to keep the plant - located about 60 km east of Toronto - open, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said.

"The first thing I said is, 'What can we do? What do we have to do?'" said Ford, referring to a Sunday call with GM Canada's president, Travis Hester. "He said the ship has already left the dock."

"We are not going away without a fight," Jerry Dias, National President of auto workers union Unifor, told a news conference in Oshawa.

Canada's motor industry has struggled to attract new investment in recent years, and the latest closure will ripple through the company's supply chain

However, Ford has no plans to close a plant in Canada, President Mark Buzzell told reporters after meeting with Trudeau on Monday.

The new trade agreement struck by the United States, Mexico and Canada in September leaves significant room for Canadian plants to increase duty-free exports.

But a former Canadian auto executive said it would be difficult for Canadian government officials to persuade GM to keep the plant open.

"The government has done everything they could to keep them afloat. Obviously incentives by themselves don't keep a car plant open," said the executive, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Members of Unifor walked out of the Oshawa plant "in protest," ahead of a meeting with GM about the announcement, a union spokeswoman said.

"I've moved my family twice for this company and they do this to me. It's terrible," a tearful worker told CBC TV as he left the plant.

GM also plans to halt production at three US assembly plants next year, while ending production of the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt hybrid, Cadillac CT6 and Buick LaCrosse. The Cruze cwill be discontinued in the US market in 2019, although GM may continue building it in Mexico for other markets, Barra said.

Dead: The Cadillac CT6 And a Ton of Other GM Cars

In addition to announcing what factories it will be closing, today GM announced that a whole bunch of its cars –even the big ones with big promotional pushes – are dead in the water. Included are many models the company claimed were ready to take on the best in the world, including the Cadillac CT6, the company’s flagship luxury sedan. UPDATE: Not in China, at least.

Chevy Volt

Much of today’s closures are seen in the context of GM having to retool for the future, but I’m old enough to remember that this is exactly how GM pitched the Volt in the first place.

From claiming 230 MPG to calling its hybrid design a pure electric vehicle, the Volt was meant to leapfrog the Prius and lead GM ahead.

It didn’t.

Cadillac CT6

We already knew that the CT6 Hybrid was going to die next year. GM’s official media sheet released today announced that the CT6 is out as of March.

We have reached out to Cadillac if this sheet means that only the hybrid is going out, but Cadillac has not responded to our request for comment. We will update if we hear back.

UPDATE: Cadillac did indeed get back to us to confirm that though the CT6 is dying, that won’t stop it from squeezing in production of its upcoming “Blackwing” twin-turbo V8 and accompanying CT6-V model.

A representative explained it stating, “important note – our plans to introduce the V-Series and Blackwing V-8 aren’t impacted by today’s news.”

So our final CT6s will be cool, at least.

Cadillac also explained that CT6 production in America will end, but production in China will continue, as will sales over there.

GM lavished praise on the CT6 when it came out, touting world-class chassis design with lightweight aluminum. Anyone who drove one wondered why such a good design could get such a basic interior, and wondered who would buy one.

This news comes just a number of months since Cadillac’s boss Johan de Nysschen swore that there were no plans to axe the CT6. Of course, not long after that announcement was made, Johan was axed himself.

Chevy Cruze

I have not driven the Chevy Cruze, but my boss Patrick George has and attests that it’s a Fine Car, but even then it’s not wildly better than the competition. This has been GM’s bugbear ever since Saturn debuted in the 1980s.

Buick LaCrosse

Buick also fashioned itself as in something of a renaissance, with new trim to make the LaCrosse a proper luxury car. It doesn’t take a lot of thought to wonder why this luxury car wasn’t offered with luxury car specs in the first place.

Chevy Impala

I remember when the current-gen Impala came out and my colleagues praised its roomy interior and good ride. Apparently that wasn’t enough to dissuade anyone from just buying a crossover instead.

Cadillac XTS

I’d make a joke about there not being enough Uber drivers to support XTS production, but Uber drivers are more than smart enough to avoid the bulky Cadillac sedan and get either a crossover with more room or just get a Camry and not worry about reliability. It should also be noted that the XTS never struck anyone as worthy of the Cadillac name, being a front-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive layout that has been around since 2012.

We knew this was coming. It was no surprise.

Previous-Generation Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra

I didn’t realize that this was something still going on with GM, but the official GM press release states that with Oshawa closing, production on these trucks will end.

'We saved them!' - Trump and GM in war of words over cutbacks

US President Donald Trump has threatened to eliminate the subsidies that General Motors enjoys, in retaliation for the carmaker culling American jobs and plants.

"The US saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get! We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including ... for electric cars," Trump said on Twitter.

Trump did not explain what "subsidies" he was referring to.

GM electric vehicles are eligible for a $7500 (R104 250) tax credit under federal law, but it is not clear how the administration could restrict those credits or if Trump had other subsidies in mind.

The Republican president on Tuesday escalated his attacks on GM's plan to cut 15 000 jobs and mothball five North American factories, including four in the United States.

GM said in a statement following Trump's comments that it was "committed to maintaining a strong manufacturing presence" in the United States after investing $22 billion (R305m) in operations here since 2009 and will add new jobs in electrification and autonomous vehicles.

The cuts will "position the company for long-term success and maintain and grow American jobs," GM said, adding that many workers at impacted plants will be able to move to other GM factories.

GM Chief Executive Mary Barra spoke to Trump over the weekend to discuss the cuts and was at the White House on Monday to meet with economic adviser Larry Kudlow.

Kudlow told reporters on Tuesday that the administration had helped GM with fuel efficiency standards and other regulations.

"We’ve done this to help you and I think his disappointment is, it seems like that they kind of turned his back on him," Kudlow said.

Why not China?

Trump also criticised GM for not closing facilities in Mexico or China.

"General Motors made a big China bet years ago when they built plants there (and in Mexico) - don’t think that bet is going to pay off. I am here to protect America’s Workers!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

White House spokesman Sarah Sanders told reporters on Tuesday that the president is looking at options.

"The president wants to see American companies build cars here in America not build them overseas and he is hopeful that GM will continue to do that here," she said.

Meanwhile, Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "discussed their disappointment in the announced closures of General Motors plants in their respective countries" during a phone call on Tuesday.

In Canada, workers returned to the assembly line at GM's Oshawa plant on Tuesday, as their union president met with Trudeau and said he was ready for "mass actions" at GM facilities.

GM said on Monday that the Oshawa plant would close in December 2019.

"We're dealing with a corporation that doesn't have any respect for Canadian and American workers, and I think we should treat them in the same vein," said Jerry Dias, national president of Unifor, which represents GM workers in Canada.

Dias said he would meet with the United Auto Workers on Wednesday and discuss the possibility of "mass actions" in GM plants across the two countries.

The wrath of the leaders of the United States and Canada dramatised the challenges GM and its Detroit rivals will face as they restructure to cope with the most dramatic technology and market shifts in decades.

GM confirms Buick Cascada dead after 2019 model

Buick has told its dealers to complete their final orders for the Cascada convertible this month because production of the car is scheduled to end this summer.

The company confirmed the details this week. General Motors' former Opel operations said in October that the Cascada was among three vehicles it would stop producing in 2019.

The Cascada is built in Poland.

"The Cascada has played its role in the portfolio perfectly, outselling many other premium convertibles while bringing in [six of every 10] buyers from outside GM," Buick said in a statement Friday to Automotive News.

"However, it has reached the end of its originally-planned lifecycle and 2019 will be the last model year offered. Dealers have been notified and many will have stock through the rest of this year."

Buick never expected significant sales from the Cascada. Since the car went on sale in 2016 as a 2016 model, about 17,000 have been sold in the U.S.

Last year, U.S. deliveries fell 26 percent from 2017 to 4,136.

The Cascada, which was featured in a Super Bowl ad for Buick, was the brand's first convertible since the 1991 Reatta.

With the discontinuation of the Cascada as well as the scheduled end of production next month of the LaCrosse sedan, the midsize Regal is slated to be the brand's only car nameplate.

When times are tough people don't change cars as often as they normally would. Combine this with markets flooded with options and it just becomes a maths thing in the end, there's too many car models and not enough buyers. Also, we're clearly deep into SUV era of mankind as they seem to be selling like hotcakes...
 
The Buick Cascada Has Been Put Out Of Its Misery - Jalopnik

Well, it finally happened. The Buick Cascada—which has been rumored to fall off the production line just about any day now—is dead.

It’s time to wave goodbye to the plump convertible that never really warranted anything more exciting than a shrug and a ‘meh, I mean, it’s OK.

Opel announced last year that the Cascada would cease production at the Gliwice, Poland plant sometime in 2019. And that “sometime” is now, GM Authority reports.

There are plenty of variants of the Cascada: it’s called the Buick Cascada in the US, the Opel Cascada in certain European countries, the Holden Cascada in New Zealand and Australia, and the Vauxhall Cascada in the UK.

But no one, anywhere, was particularly interested in literally anything this convertible had to offer. That is, in fact, one hell of a ‘meh’ car.

I will admit that it has uniqueness going for it. I can’t say I’ve ever imagined making a convertible out of my otherwise entirely nondescript sedan—but someone out there did because some designers are far more courageous than I.

It is so often the case that no one appreciates the art until the artist has died. Unfortunately, I can’t say this will likely be the case with the Cascada.

Dead: All Buick Regals, Including The TourX Wagon Too - Jalopnik

You knew it was coming, because it was just too good to last. The Buick Regal, which includes the Regal Sportback, Regal GS and the beloved Regal TourX wagon, are dead in the United States and Canada and after the 2020 model year.

Pour one out for the classic American family car.

Anyway, per General Motors, the Regal will keep on being be sold in China, where people still like sedans.

So long, TourX wagon. You had a good run, earned yourself some loyal followers. But it wasn’t enough.
