My wife and I own a 2007 Opel Corsa Club.

Over the last few months the flasher unit on the car has failed three
times. The problem manifests itself as the emergency lights getting
stuck in a flashing state.

While on her way to collecting our 5 month old from the Creche` they
failed again on the N2 in rush hour traffic. Needless to say this has
caused a lot of concern as there is no way to indicate direction
changes.

I took the vehicle to a GM dealership to be repaired this evening
(16/01/2008) and the foreman there told me that GM are aware of the faulty
flasher units but send them out as replacement units anyway.

As indicators are vital safety equipment, the idea of a car
manufacturer sending out these faulty flasher units horrifies me, and
as a consumer I really don't know what recourse I have in a situation
like this.

In short think very carefully before buying GM.

Go to another GM garage, sometimes they mess something up and try blame someone else, it's their usual style.

I've spoken to two other mechanics about it and they say they know about the issue. They've seen a lot of Corsas come inrecently with the same problem. Definitely a product defect.

The same as with some late Golf, Jetta and Polo models where brake light switch failure is a widespread problem. Overseas VW has recalled over 800 000 units, but here they make it off as normal wear and tear and you are self responsible for repairs as soon it is out of warranty. No preventative replacement as long it works.
The contacts and mechanism of the new switch is well designed and not as flimsy as the old one, which is now superseded.

When the switch fails it does not show on the brake warning light but on the engine management (EPC) warning light. So you are aware of some problem engine wise instead of brake related.

For the interested of you, Google : EPC warning light or similar questions with EPC in it.
