Gmail Question

Is the originating IP address not in the mail header?

If it was sent from gmail it will be a Google IP.

True - but it's worth taking a look just in case it wasn't sent from the web interface.

Even if you do manage to get an IP address, how far does that get you?

You still need to open a case and obtain a court order to get the relevant ISP to reveal the identity of the person...

Nope.

And even doing so you aren't any better than the person sending the dodgy emails or whatever they are.

Question: Is there some sort of malware that she could send the sender that would put a spanner in the works of this sycophant? Would his/her/their Gmail account accept an attachment containing malware? And if yes... Where would one get ones grubby hands on such a bit of sneakyness?

Gmail scans all attachments and disables them if they are executables, so no, it wouldn't work. You would have to phish the person via another website or method. Why dont you just block the person and leave it at that?Unless its incriminating....

Gmail will clean anything malicious. You could embed an image link in an email that will load an image from a server you have access to, but again, you will only have an IP address from that and would need a court order to do anything with it.

Its not incriminating. Its just downright lewd and disgusting.
Have advised her to send a "What the HELL is wrong with you? Gmail gave me your IP address after i forwarded them the mail you sent me etc etc" type email and then personally address it to the top 20 people she believes may have an axe to grind. Lets hope she can flush out the culprit.

Well then report it as spam, and it will be moved to the spam folder in future. Not sure what the crisis is here...
