General Motors SA has introduced a 5.3-litre V8 engine to its H3 Hummer range at a time when the Hummer's very existence is in peril – and it says it's because the market - Hummer owners in particular - want it.
"We can't stop developing new products just because the ownership of the brand could change," a GM SA spokesman told motoring.co.za. (Yea right!!!)
The engine is the 224kW/434Nm unit used in the US-built H3A and is being imported, complete with transmission, from the US. It makes 44kW more power, 104Nm more torque and has 861kg more towing capacity than the 3.7-litre version
GM SA plans to assemble 'just over 100' RHD V8 Hummers.
The front section of the chassis and engine compartment of the H3 has been modified to take the V8 engine and a special oil pan designed to ensure constant oil pressure when driving on steep grades.
An improved steering system enhances on-road feel, GM says, and off-road reliability and a cast-iron front differential case has replaced the aluminium one to better handle torque output. New engine mounts, a thicker front prop shaft, higher torsion-bar rates to support the increased mass and specific shock-absorber valving are all unique to the V8.
GM SA plans to assemble "just over 100" right-hand drive V8 Hummers for the SA market and a yet-undecided number of left-hand drives for export.
"The V8 not only gives you the space and comfort to enjoy the drive but also the perfect viewing position to fully appreciate what is happening outside your windows," the SA automaker says.(Plus the ability to have one last look at the planet whilst you stuff it up)'This beast accelerates to 100km/h in 8sec'.
"The V8 body retains the unique, instantly recognisable style of a Hummer but with an even more commanding presence. Striking good looks and outstanding on and off-road handling are guaranteed."
The V8 has been hooked to a Hydra-Matic electronically controlled four-speed auto transmission rated to tow 2448kg.
"The H3 V8 was designed to get you 'out there' and 'up there' even faster and more efficiently," GM SA says. "This beast accelerates to 100km/h in eight seconds - impressive, given that it weighs about 2.3 tons!"
LOCKING DIFFS
The V8 will be available in Adventure and Luxury spec, the automaker says. For the Adventure, that means low-range gearing of 4.03:1 versus the 2.64:1 in the Luxury, electronically locking front and rear diffs and rugged shock-absorbers.
The Luxury adds chromed wheels and reversing cameras.
The H3 V8 Luxury edition is priced at R531 887, the H3 V8 Adventure R541 886 and the 2009 H3 3.7L Luxury from R495 250.
