If you are writing services/apis/websites, I would hazard a guess that 99% of the time cross platform is utterly meaningless.

Java isn't cross platform anyway, it only runs on the JVM

Exactly... client Apps never care about the OS on the host server; and the two certainly don't ever have to use the same language, framework, ....
