Hi

A friend of mine recently got a new Gobii WiFi touch tablet as a present. She lives very far from me, but I have been helping her via Whatsapp and email to set it up. I myself have got a generic cheap tablet, which I'm happy with. But it seems that the Gobii has some problems.

Firstly, it doesn't come out with Play Store. Being a tech geek, I just mailed the .apk file to her. Oddly, the tablet doean't recognize any .apk file. It says something along the lines of unsupported file type. Why would that be, it runs Android after all? I got suuspicious and asked her to send me a picture, thinking she might have mistaked it for the old ereader, but it's the tablet all right.

Then for some real oddness. When plugging in headphones, the tablet plays music through both the speaker and headphones! The most complex piece of tech she had untill she got that was a BlackBerry 8520, so she really doesn't understand new tech.

Should I tell her the tablet is faulty or what?

Did she change security settings to allow installation from unknown sources?

My apologies. I was an idiot. My tablet does have that option, but it's under security instead of apps where it usually is. I set up my tablet months ago, and in the meantime I have set up a lot of Android phones, mostly Samsung. I got a bit confused.

Settings can vary between devices.

Can you ask your friend to try installing the F-Droid client from https://f-droid.org/

Regarding the audio issue, what happens if she inserts the headphones before starting the audio player?

Ok she finally came back to me. No matter what she does with the headphones, the issue stays. I even had hertrying another pair.

Regarding the app install issue, even after allowing non market apps, it still doesn't recognise a .apk file.

Any ideas?

Strange issue with headphones...

I guess the only other way to install .apk's would be to to install the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) on a pc, then use the included 'adb' (Android Debug Bridge) utility to install via usb. You can get it here.

You will need to enable 'usb debugging' on the tablet first. If you are using Windows, you will also need to install the usb drivers from here. Adb is a command line tool & you can use the following syntax to install an apk: adb install /path/to/app.apk

If you don't want to download the entire sdk, you can try this instead.

Thanks lot. If it was mine, or I had access to it, I would have tried that. But like I said she doesn't know the first thing about tech, so I'd rather not direct her into cmd... Much safer that way, and besides, she doesn't know what she's missing so I'm not bothering any more. Thanks for trying though. :)

I recently got a Gobii and with that one was a shortcut on the main tab.

You can look at this website
Gobii Getting Started

I sent my Gobii back, cause I had some troubles with it. When using Skype, other people see my video image as green. So they refund me. The audio gave scratch sounds and when watching a video, the video lag all the time. Maybe just a faulty unit.

Hope you have sorted it out, or hope this link helps.

Play Store is available

Hi

Play Store is available. Just install the app first.
It is available by clicking on the "Free Apps" icon.
