Anyone have one of these? Gobii E-Reader? Considering it for my wife for christmas, but don't want to get it if its Cr@p. She doesnt need WiFi and 3G etc, so that why considering this. And it's colour screen. Many thanks

The fact that it has a colour LCD makes it so, IMHO. For book reading, it just does not compare with e-ink.

Besides, the few comments there are not showering it in praise either.

Yeah but then surely it's better to spend a bit more and get a proper tablet, at least then you can do other useful things as well as the odd bit of reading.

Edit: Review here if you haven't spotted it already.

The experience of reading the books or documents, however, is decidedly inferior. It does what it says it will do, but offers the user very little satisfaction. The screen may be full-colour LCD, but the experience is low-res and almost fuzzy.

Thanks for the replies. I guess the concensus is no. Got it. Thanks. Next question though - Kindle? I River? Budget is fairly limited.

Either get an iPad or a Kindle. Don't bother with the knockoff devices

In this price range of e-reader also look at the Elonex, Amazon's kindle and then their kindle Touch.

I can't comment on the Gobii reader. Just take into account that for some reason the iPad is often used as a benchmark for anything that looks like a tablet.....you need to compare the Gobii with readers in the same class. I do have a friend who has used the Elonex for over 2 years and is still quite happy with it.

Personally I would say the kindle touch is the best deal. It is available in SA. For 20$ less you can get the standard Kindle. I use the colour Kindle Fire (no e-ink) and am very happy with its reading performance.

It does depend on what you think is important to your wife. If it is only going to be used as a reader getting a fully fledged tablet will be a complete waste of money.

Thanks LinH. She has a blackberry, but is heavy into books, and everyone in her book club has a kindle or some sort of e-reader. Thought i would bring her up to speed. I saw the Kindle Fire. Looks very nice. Do you use all the features?

iPad is out of budget. For the kindle, where does one buy the e-books. On Kalahari, all the e-books state they cannot be used on kindle? then on what?

You can convert any type of ebook to any other type using Calibre, and which is free and sort of like itunes for books.

Torrent sites are also awash with ebooks if piracy doesn't phase you.

Genuine 4-5 days delivery?

Look, things can happen during this period of the year, especially when dealing with our customs department. But the general experience when ordering the Kindle is 4-5 days. I got mine and the wife's in 5 days but most get it in 4.

Thanks Roo!. And buying the books of Amazon.com. How is this done, Credit Card? through the Kindle? Apologies for all the questions.

Oh, and should mention that igear.co.za have the ad version kindle for less than R1200 iirc. There's a thread on it somewhere here(sorry, but posting from my phone just now) . Some concerns over what is obviously a grey import, but local delivery is a plus. Maybe drop them a mail.
