Is pointless.
Any destressing you do gets undone within an hour:

Yeah I know this one :(

Its disappointing to say the least....

Thankfully I've moved to a less operational roll so my email numbers are way way down.... but it still doesn't help when you get back to masses of emails outstanding.

Good enough reason not to pursue a career in a huge corporate ?

I tend to think so.

Still though, I would say at least 14000 of those are unnecessary spam.

Not that stressful. The most I have had to deal with when getting back from leave was about 1200. 800 of those where system generated stuff that other people had monitored while gone so I could highlight and delete basically. OF the the remainder I could scan through them and archive most of them as it was inane stuff I was copied on or spam. Perhaps there where 50-60 I actually had to respond to or do some work about. Still, that was my job back then. I was on a good team and we where well covered and well managed so work did not build up while staff where on leave. First day back was generally a nice day as you could feel like you had accomplished 1200 emails worth of work for about 2-3 hours of work with the rest of the time spent easing into the actual work.

In America some executives do not have any formal paid leave. Instead part of the job is that you will always be available on blackberry/phone. When things are quiet the managers go away but they have to check communications at least once a day. This is becoming common for EXCO level jobs from what I hear. Even my boss when away in Greece last month he cleared his inbox and replied to emails most days so that stuff was kept up to date. Sad life. I don't ever want work emails on my phone and have resisted a free work phone for that reason. I am a big believer is work/home separation.

Actually I forgot to mention, I have adopted a new email policy when I am on leave.

I set my Out of Office message with the dates I will be unavailable.
When I get back to work, all mail received in that time frame gets marked as read. If its important, they will get in touch with me again.

That's what I've done. Couple of exchange rules to delete the auto notifications and stuff, and marked the rest as read.
