i am able to go online visit 8ta.com, 8ta.mobi, & other sites without receiving internet settings.

i use vodacom 3g. i can even download from mobi site.

If you have data airtime on your modem's SIM, it will connect to the network by sending the modem a *99# command. That is all you need. No login and password are required.

im talking about a cellphone connecting to the internet.

Generally most providers work with the same APN setting of 'internet'. As long as your sim is voda/8ta/Cell C, etc. It will use appropriate network.

u guys are funny. if it true what u are saying.

if anyone disagree, go online with cellc sim, using a cellphone with vodacom internet settings & see what happens.

Vodacom, MTN, Cell-C and 8ta all use the same internet settings ...

APN = internet

Number = *99#

This is for normal internet connections, excluding special APN's such VPN, unrestricted, etc.

If you need other settings to access the internet, then it is as a result of your device, rather than the service providers.

Small correction... They usually have more than one lot of settings and no doubt some are incompatible. I do think it depends on the phone sometimes too.

Hmmm .... , different phones have different limitations, or abilities ...

Using either of the USB modems I have, I just plug it into the USB port and they connect - no further intervention required. I have however installed the drivers for each device.

Makes no difference if there is a Cell-C, Vodacom or 8ta SIM in the modem.

Correct. The only thing you really need to change when swapping SIMs from different operators is your outgoing mail server if you are using a dedicated e-mail client rather than a web-based e-mail application.

Vodacom needs smtp.vodacom.co.za, MTN needs mail.mtn.co.za, CellC needs mail.cmobile.co.za and 8ta needs smtp.saix.net. Your incoming mail settings do not change unless you are using one of the cellphone providers' freebie email systems.

But again, these only apply to your email settings. As mentioned above, in principle in South Africa all the operators use the same internet access settings.

I've had operators give me a plethora of different settings in the past - different apns, server addresses, etc. but eventually settled for 'internet' as apn as it seems to work on all providers.
