Going rate for painting?

What's the going rate for a decent painter, either per hour or per square meter?

I have a house that I'm planning on putting on sale in a few weeks and it desperately needs a repaint, inside and out. But the first quote I've received (Which is purely for labour as I will be providing the materials and tools) is R35k for about two and a half weeks work, which equates to roughly R2000 a day (for a single person) Am I being cheap or is that the going rate these days?

Last time I had work done of this nature I was being charged R500 p/d, per person, and that wasn't all that long ago and the work quality was fine.
 
Managed to dig up a quote for a small painting job we had done a year ago and that was R45 p/sqm for walls in pretty good condition. So R35k for an entire house inside and out isn't unreasonable (assuming it's a decent job).
 
get someone from builders

ask them how much

the job doesnt have to be the greatest i guess but look neat

and always pay for the job

not per day not per hour

also pay when the job is done or give money here and there but never a big amount

get a price for the job. Normal to pay deposit and balance on completion.

When I was contracting, a ballpark idea of price would be get material cost, then generally ne prepared for labour at 3 times that price. Special or above extra work excluded. ( wall repairs/ structural cracks etc)

So if you priced material for job at 7k, then 21k is the ballpark for labour.

30 -35k is normal now for painting 3 bedroom house. material included.

You should have your own painter/ builder/ gardener etc

Labour only - depends on the size of the house and how much prep and repair work needs to be done.
Like everybody said do a complete walk through, make notes and get a quote for the entire job. State the quality of work you expect and clarify who pays for spills and splashes.

Ask the neighbours for a reliable recommendation. The amount of paint you use is equal to the painters honesty and not what the salesman told you.

Never pick up a painter from the street, its going to cost you a lot of money and endless problems.
Only get a painter from a referral from someone you know well.
A good painter should be R400-R500 a day
A good painter you will not have to check if he is working and not slacking during the day. A bad one from the street will stretch the time to get more days in.
 
Get a well-known hardworking foreigner that has done work for other residents in the area for R500p/d.

These locals are lazy and take chances. Just to paint a roof they wanted me to pay R40k and supply 3 meals a day for all 4 workers...
