I have been a private tutor to high school kids since Matric (in 2001).

I am just trying to gauge if my prices are right - some of my friends reckon I am getting ripped off.

Basically, I tutor German and Maths mostly but it is whatever the kids need. I have done all the way from grade 3 to Matric in the past but currently have grade 8s and 9s.

Lessons are no less than 45 mins and no more than an hour.

I drive to the people.

I ask R125 per lesson. (so 45-60 mins)

Two lessons back to back (90 mins) costs R250.

What do people think? And, were I to continue next year, could I raise the price to R150 per lesson?

PS - as far as qualifications go, I did the German Abitur (A-Levels) in 2002, have a Diploma in Computer Science, a First Class Honours Degree in Business Science (Law major) and am completing my LLB this year. I also took German up to honours level during my Business Science degree.

Thanks for feedback :)

I think that price is too low if you drive to the students. It's about right if they come to you (although I don't see R150.00 being too high as it is 1 on 1 by the sound of it?).

I think it depends on the area and the background majority of students, though.

Yes, I should have added that. They are 1-on-1 lessons and the students are from two wealthy private schools.

Frankly charge what you are worth. R250 an hour for the first hour.... back to back lessons, R400 for 2 hours :)

don't let them abuse you

You have how many qualifications again?.... go read your own post.

Considering you drive to the students house, and that professionals charge for their time.

Try charge that much, if you lose too many clients, charge less :P

Whoa, it sounds like I am getting a really cr@p deal :o. I tutor through an agency, and only get paid R75/hour. I tutor Grade 8-12 students on any subject (except Biology and Geography, never did those in matric). Luckily my parents pay for my petrol though, but the agency wouldn't pay for my petrol even if I had to pay for it myself.

Definitely going to go to an agency that pays at least R100/hour next year.

Yeah, I have always worked for myself. I looked into the agency thing and they are good for securing you definite income ( I have to deal with cancellations and such which are not great) but in the end, it is worth the hassle.

Yeah, I suppose I need to build a name for myself before I go on my own. Unfortunately, I have this tutee who has not appeared at two of my study sessions with him ... without him phoning before hand . He always claimed he "tried" to phone me, but that's rubbish since my phone never recorded a missed call . At least the agency is paying me for those 2 lessons that he missed.

However I have done two lessons with my brother's friend who is matric and only 5 minutes away from home. Got paid R150/hour  :p which I thought was rather excessive (Just had to help him write a history essay). I think your going rate is fine, although I'm sure you could shift it up to R150/hour quite easily.

Indeed. A brief search of Gumtree shows that most people start at R150/hour.

I know some teachers that ask more than R200/hour for language tuition.
