Going rates for a good web design?

Care to enlighten us a little more on the subject of why we *should* use Flash for an entire website, bradrap? I'd be interested in what you have to say.

Open your eyes to flash - I ditched it years ago and avoid sites with it as their core. No matter how much one may think that Flash is a suitable replacement for actual design, it is not and will never be. And apple-bashing for SJ's stance on the matter does not make flash any better. An idea needs to be able to sell itself, not cancel its critics = the reason I will NEVER vote DA, for example.

I never said you should use Flash, but there is absolutely no reason nowdays (stop living in the past) why you should not incorporate it into your sites.

Different strokes for different folks.

Good reply. I agree. Flash has it's purpose - I think the other posters are against it being used for menial duties that HTML/CSS/JavaScript can perform in a much simpler and transparent fashion.

I'm writing up a quote at the moment for a site that is pure flash. Not a pretty sight/site, and exactly what we're trying to avoid.

Aah that I can go for. I dislike sites that are all flash. But if flash is part of say a wider smooth design and is not critical to the operations of the site, then sure, go for it.

@Bradrap I thought you meant full flash sites. I agree with Gregorgy that sites that make use of flash in ways that don't directly effects the main purpose of the site is fine. I still think flash should be replaced with javascript and jquery.

Also why would you ask "Care to elaborate?" only to come right back and say my reply is total bs. If you already have your opinion set don't try and start efights.

And here I thought all the Flash fanboys had died out ages ago lol.
Flash should only be used for exactly what its name means - Flash. Flashy bits. Flashy animations.
Sure you can use Flash to create an entire site - but you can also use helium to fly an airship...

Lmfao. But i've seen alot of people in here play down "flashy" websites for more functionality. I still maintain looks and functionality should be balanced. My 2c worth though

I think this thread should get back on track. The question was going rates, and not how much flash rocks or sucks! But.... As we're on the topic, flash should never be used for an entire website! Unless you're a well known huge ass company like say Coca cola! Fact of the case is, Google doesn't index it as well as it does plain HTML websites! Also, it is a bitch to maintain, and wouldn't wish it upon anyone to do daily updates on a flash websites, unless you use some XML trickery, but even then it's still not cool! Flash has it's place, and could definitely be used in combination with an html website!

So, in my own words, back on track.

As for the rates Mr Pitbull...

Sure, you could get a site for R6k like Nokkie suggested, but I can bet you it's going to look all 1995, and it's definitely not going to function like you want it to. The whole dealers page thing is a bit more advanced than just your average website, as well as them adding their own products.

So let's talk price. And I'm mean quality stuff...

A logo, expect to pay anything between R1500, and R3000.

For a design (this is just how the site looks, not how it functions), that looks really good, don't expect anything less that R8k! Anything less, and you're ending up with a template or a crappy design! This is based on not just my own thumb suck pricing, but on some people I know that does some awesome work...

Then, the functionality... It all depends on the products! If it's more like just the display of the products, like detailed info, a picture etc, then it's not that bad. I would be able to do something like that anywhere between R10k and R18k. A good example would be a Real Estate website. They got agents, which upload properties (products) which has details, but does not get purchased online (for very good reasons, LOL).

But if you want people to actually buy the products online, that's a bit more complex and outside of the scope that I focus on. A normal shopping cart is no problem, but a site where you got dealers, they add their own products, and people buy it online gets too complex. This, again depending on exact details can range from anything between R30k and R500k. Obviously the upper end of that pricing would be top class, and be appropriate if you are aiming on international markets.

These figures might look drastic, but without exact details we're all just running in the dark! Your business could be a lot less complicated than what I'm imagining and thus these prices would be a lot less.

Anyway, when and if you come right, post the link so we can see what it looks like!

Cheers

Yes, its definately good to have both. But at the start of a project its best to focus on functionality, and worry about the looks afterwards as projects usually have time constraints.
Better to have a working fugly project at your deadline, than a good looking non working one IMHO.

Website designing has good market these days. There is no doubt that you get good amount for designing websites. To promote one’s company thinking out of box can make you recognize individually which leads to success in the internet business.
