Will probably go to matrix warehouse nearby and get the 600VA, 800VA UPSs, although don't know which brand and spec but without one nowadays it's very difficult because we ran a business from home. At least need sometime to save our work and/or finish something urgent. :o Viva ANC Viva!

Get your self a generator as well, as your ups won't last long

That might come after I bought the USPs. Got to look around for a suitable model, that 750W one someone mentioned in one of the post seems ok. Need more research before getting one.

I am also going to get a couple of those Matrix UPSs, the shop near me only get stock on friday.

Anyone know how good they are ?

Make sure the UPS's are genny compatible - this will save you a lot of headaches

I would suggest to get an UPS which can deliver 15 to 30 minutes of standby power, enough time to get the genny started.

Stupid question, i have a 550W power supply in my pc, will i need a ups 550W+ or will like something with a lower W work too?

I called matrix illovo, all stock booked....Rivonia, no stock, Ferndale, no one is answering the phone.....
I ordered Powercom Line interactive 600VA R427 each * 3 (link http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=150_151&products_id=1096)

I saw one which is like R300 from PCMALL. But too cheap, probably 5 minutes battery power. At least this one I can see some specs and looks decent!!

Nope, these UPS don't categorize according to Watts but VA. Higher the VA, longer you can use your PC for. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Correct, AFAIK...

I have 2 UPS's on my PC - a 1000VA to run the PC (with 2x 450w PSU's) and a 700VA to run the LCD, ADSL Modem and speakers -- seems to work fine and gives me up to 40 minutes of idle PC time before shutting down...

Will a 600VA ups be enough to run my pc, router and screen?, couldnt care less about saving work, just want it to prevent power spikes when i use my generator.?

call a company by the name of current automation,

ask them for there 12v dc - 220v ac inverters, you get some that function as a UPS then get 2x 200AH batterys and connect them, volia should keep u happy long after eishkom has given up the goast.

i use them silent and long lasting. i have the 2500w inverter

Great idea!

Surprisingly, not.
Lasts 8-12 mins.
Don't let the price fool you on that one. I initially bought it for satellite and DVD player - I got gatvol of resetting the clock etc all the time (this was back when a power failure was 20 mins every few months).
It ran those devices in their standby mode for 60-80 mins.

Anyways, when I cancelled DSTV, I moved the UPS to the PC.

Cheap stuff doesn't work properly. ;)

I would go for the inverter and car battery one - will last longer, and you can add more batteries if needed, or even run your fridge from your car :)

Higher VA rating doesn't strictly speaking = Higher battery life, it simply means the inverter can handle more power.

Instead you need to look at the batteries, Usually the smaller one run from 2x 7aH 12vDC batteries in series which = 14a x 12V = 168watt/VA for one hour. Of course it's quite easy to mod these things, personally I put a 45aH battery (Car battery) on a APC unit, looks a bit backyard mechanic :p but works like a charm.

Best way to know exactly how far you can go is to check your PC's load with a Watt/Hour type plug, and then ask what type of batteries the UPS uses and work it out.

F@K, Sybaritics confirmed with their supplier for UPS stock, but after I pay for them and send the proof of payment through, the story changed and now there's no more stock and got to wait for a week!!!
I am asking a full refund and will try the other shops. Too bad matrix warehouse no stock currently and desperately need them.

Had been busy the whole day and just came back from PTA, pouring water from the sky at a stage and I can see nothing......Fourtunately I got my GPS and know where to turn since my tank was very empty.

Power was cutted like 8 to 11 tonight. I called pcmall this afternoon and they confirm if I order may get stock on friday or monday. During blackout I ordered 3 Blazer 800VA UPS online with my PPC phone, the problem is I don't want to go the bank transfer, takes too long (We EFT payment from nedbank to STD 2 days ago for a performance guarantee, not yet reflected). Asked Gavin from PCMALL the other day he confirmed I can quote something like 'pay on collection' at reference for direct deposit place, which I never found anything as he mentioned on the PCMALL basket.

Shopping experience with PCMALL is something to remember:
1) Could not find my past orders/ordered items.
2) I was ordering on my PPC phone when power was off, now I can't find the order reference number since can't check your history, Seems like banking and order reference only shown once at the last step of order process.
3) I was told I could quote something during order process to say pay cash on collection, which I find no place to put this down. I pay Sybaritic today for UPSs they confirmed and later could not deliver, got to sort out refund with them and would only want to pay on collection for now.
