I am thinking of surprising the family with a puppy and was keen on hearing peoples thoughts on golden retrievers.

I lost my Alaskan Malamute well over a year ago and since then my poodle (street special) has been lonely.

Now that I am in my place and getting settled I think it is time.

What are your thoughts on these dogs? I really like them. I hear they are good with kids which is a must as I have small kiddies.

Thoughts? Feelings?

I do see a pure bred is not cheap.

We had 2 on the farm on 9 months we gave them away as we put on electric wires across the garden as they messed up the plants and koi pond. Breaking the wire to the bird cages , eating the birds (finces/qails ect).
Garden hoses didn't last , basically anything that was chewable even the car bumpers was a mess.
But maybe we had a fluke, they had ample space as it was a farm / chew toys ect so I dont know.

But like I said maybe we just had a special case.

My mom got a golden retriever and you will need a large area for the dog to run or at least exercise the dog with daily walks. They have lots of energy and get bored pretty quickly which means they will destroy your garden.

great dogs! the best!! with kids etc- there are no better dogs! they teh most popular dogs in USA and canada for a reason man!
the only act out and dig the garden up and chew stuff up etc if they are not given attention.
mine is 10 months old, i walk him almost daily. he spends a few afternoons per week at the local doggy park socialising etc..
sure he has plenty energy, but he needs attention as well. at home while i study at night, he sleeps at my foot until i send him out at night.
they say dogs, like kids, usually adopt their parents' or owners temperament etc..
though there has to be a bit of stern discipline now and then just to make sure he knows who's the boss!

Best pets ever!! Clever and loves water.
They are vey easy to teach and you have to teach them or they become terribly naughty:D

If I ever get a dog it's number one on the list, closely followed by a Huskey.

Buy from a reputable breeder as they do have hip and shoulder issues. ( inbreeding like all big dogs)

If you like intelligent dogs. No better choice.

Amazing animals, we had two growing up and boy i still miss them :(.

Just hope you don't get a marley :D. Mostly i like to leave my dogs and let them be themselves but take em to training or at least get them semi trained.

The best animal i have ever owned and he is still going strong, a white shepard, at least thats what i think he is haha. Really good boy, super protective and naughty but also listens at times :D.

Go get a pup that needs a home though, so many awesome dogs just sitting in a cage waiting for a home.

They are very intelligent dogs that needs much mental stimulation. Even if they have ample open space, they still want you to give attention to them. The first two years are especially bad - that is the time when they will chew anything.

We have had two labs (they are very similar to the Golden Retriever as far as personality is concerned), and while they did wreck the garden, it was manageable with plenty of exercise and training. If you can take your dog to a dog school, it will really help.

dude you had a malamute

i have myself two golden lab's, amazing animals, they require a lot of attention and can be a handful, but seeing as though you dealt with a malamute i reckon you could handle it.

They have a great temperament and should mostly be fine with children.

here they are:

They're great animals... My folks have a golden retriever and a black lab.. great tempremants.

Me, I'm partial to English Bull Terriers, but thats cos they're just amazing dogs all round and have such great personalities.

I got my arm torn up as a kid by a golden retriever but it was a rescue dog so who knows.

Our next dog is going to be a Great Dane - they're great with small kids.

I know people here will think I'm mental, but English Bull Terriers are also amazing with kids.... (for those who don't know what breed i'm talking about I've posted a pic below)

I watched one look after a friends kid once, the little guy was missioning around the garden and there was a 2m high wall that he could have fallen off, and the dog kept getting in the kids way when he got too near the wall, and once he got around the dog, the dog gripped his shirt gently and pulled him away from the wall.... the lighty then decided it would be a good idea to ride the dog, and the dog was quite happy to let this happen.

I personally grew up with them and there are photos of me standing on the dog so that I could see onto the table, and the dog just lay there and didn't flinch or anything.

Poodle = trouble

I like the suggestion of the English Bull Terrier though, either that or a Jack Russel. Both brilliant dogs

Awesome dogs.
Do your homework when buying these though as they get asma(spelling).

They can get asthma, skin conditions, all sorts if not looked after properly.. and they do require a very strong family leader since they're such a strong willed animal.

I have a golden retriever and he's one of the best dogs I have ever owned. Very intelligent; incredibly obedient and brilliant with other dogs and kids. I'd definitely recommend spending the cash at a good breeder...

I do see a pure bred is not cheap.

Try the Retriever Rescue Club or some of the animal shelters.
There are hundreds of dogs needing homes because owners are leaving or cannot afford them any more.
An adult dog saves all the puppy hassle.
A homed dog is incredibly rewarding and showers one with devotion.
In twenty years I have homed about fifteen spaniels and every one was different and very rewarding.
