1.8T shouldnt be that bad at all on consumption, but let the MK4 boys talk for themselves.

If you drive sensibly the fuel economy is great. Most people that drive turbo's however tend to be a touch lead footed. Its all down to your driving style.

Just make sure someone else hasn't driven it too hard. GTI's and other fast cars are notorious for having been driven to the limit and beyond.

Our Golf 4 2000, 85k on odo.

Urban = 12/3l/100km (mostly CT city bowl)
open road = =/-9.5l/100km

These figures are driving sensibly at speed limits, goes up a bit if you thrash it.

Great car though, engine seems bullet proof, just check the clutch and electric windows when buying.

And the starter... just makes a noise nothing broken or anything. Just a noise...

Thats quite heavy...

If you drive like a granny you can get 8L/100km, it goes up drastically if you nail it. Get one in good condition and have it remapped (chipped) for lots of fun.

chipped--more fun--more fuel==expensive.....

buy a Golf 4 1.9 Tdi rather:

97k on the clock - 2003 model
open road: 5.5 l/100km
urban: 6.3l/100km

diesel price is high at the moment but it's still worth it.

we bought my wife the Golf 4 TDI 18 months ago.

I was so impressed we swapped cars, I now drive the tdi, she the gti.

you may think I am mad, but I prefer the tdi, looking for another tdi polo/golf 1.9 now.

Seriously, if you want a quick car that you will modify, go for the 1.8t. (revo/dim/FRC)

If you need a good driver that is economical, go for the TDI. If I granny around CT looking for a surf, 4.2l/100km, when I hammer it around city bowl (see above) 6.3l/100km.

Can't believe my wife drives a faster car than me, BUT, I actually prefer it;) Golf 4 TDI all the way if it has full history and is in good nick. I was lucky that I purchase mine with one owner who was a Doctor from Fish Hoek.

Will keep the tdi longer than the GTI, that's a fact.
