Were these cars produced locally?
It has the 1.4 tsi motor and dsg gearbox.
I saw one for sale @ R138k with 120 000km. It is a 2008 model. I'm yet to look at the car though.
Does anyone know anything about these cars?
I was looking at a 2.0 tdi sportline, but that guy is messing about and I stumbled across this car.
I read some overseas reviews of the car, seems good but I never noticed them on our roads. Might be that limited numbers were released here.
The seller purchased it from a dealer in cape town and the car is financed so if it is an import, all the paper work has to be in order.

VW did bring a couple in. Very very few though.
Nice car, very economical and not too slow either, considering the engine size. It's essentially the same drivetrain and the new polo gti.

How about reliability? Its a very high stressed engine and if the Polo GTI is having major problems I wouldn't like a 4 year old, earlier engine.

It's not overly highly stressed. I'm not aware of major problems with the PGTI either. Once I know had an issue with the supercharger, related to the waterpump... but otherwise they seem to be pretty reliable.

VW Motorsport in the UK got something like 300hp out of this motor with no issues.

Do you have the polo?
I read that this car doesn't handle the dsg that well. Gear changes aren't as good as the diesel version and GTI.

I won't be racing the car, I like the idea of having power when needed and also good consumption when driven normally.
How is consumption on these motors?

Its also something you don't see around a lot, if at all.
I'm going to have a look this weekend. I also have no idea of the book/retail value of this car. Need to find that out as well.

I don't have the polo, no. I am on the committee of the VWClub of SA though, so I know quite a few owners ;)

I never got to drive the Golf GT unfortunately, but everyone who I spoke to who did, raved about it. I'm not sure whether it has the 6 or 7 speed DSG though. The boxes are very different. The Golf GTI and TDI have 6 speed wet clutch boxes, the polo gti has a 7 speed dry clutch setup which could account for different feel in the gear changes etc. We have a TDI DSG and the gearchanges are silky smooth.

Maybe just testdrive the car and see how the box feels to you.

Values - good luck. I doubt enough were sold to justify an entry in M&M. Even my car isn't in there :p Go by similarly specced and aged cars.
138k is probably a bit high for that mileage in my opinion. Also, if it's the wet-clutch dsg, the oil is due for a change at 120k and is expensive.

Its a 6 speed box. I'll test drive it on Saturday.
Will see how much I can negotiate with the price.
The car is coming back from the 120k service today so no expense there if I do purchase.

Thanks for all the info, much appreciated.

Buying a performance car 2nd hand is risky business, especially when its got more than 100,000km on the clock. So be very thorough when you test drive it...

Will do that, thanks. Looking at quite a few other cars tomorrow as well. Will help me decide.

Not really a performance car and the dsg box protects from over revving/labouring etc...

Droidsx, get yourself that VW mate. They are great cars especially Golf 5's . I owned two of them and you wont regret. They were well built those cars especially the Gti 5. I asked around many service advisers at VW before purchasing one and they told me that surprisingly being a perfomance car there are not many problems with manual Gti's. But I was warned to stay away from the DSG especially when its after warranty. Once again mate, go for your VW.

I ended up going with a 2007 Seat Leon FR. I know they left the country, but I always liked these cars. Hoping that it gives me some good service, especially being the dreaded second hand performance car.

I am in Cape Town. I have been lurking the forums, but I can't register with a gmail address, it says the domain is blacklisted. I have been doing loads of reading though.
Do you have the same username on that forum?
