Car died on me yesterday. took it to Wackers Montague.

They phoned this morning saying fuel control module burnt out, over R4k to fit new one, and they suggest original VW, hence the price.
They also highly reccommend replacing the fuel pump as well, extra R6500.

I fitted an aftermarket fuel pump 2 years ago as it failed.

Do I replace both? Should I save money and go aftermarket?

VW charging R2467 for the module. So Wackers want R1800 for diagnostics and labour? for a part that takes 10 minutes to replace? It literally sits under the back seat.

Scrap yard?

It does not matter, they have done the diagnostic and that is their price, pay them for the diagnosis and go buy the part and fit it yourself if you can.

Total parts from vw cost R6650. Wackers labor is 3 hours R2200. They quote me R11200 lol.

Do I attempt the fix on my own, tough call.
YouTube vids give me the impression it can be done in an hour. Does anything need to be 'reset' afterwards I don't know.....

They need to drain the tank and do all of that to get to it don't they?

It's not a small job.

And yes I do believe there is a reset process on the VAG software but that might be the fuel sensor I was thinking of.

Wackers generally aren't unreasonable, but you can give Engine Techniques a call and get a competing quotation if you want.

For the module it's just attaching the new unit. The pump is more of a job.
I'm at VW waiting to talk to a mechanic to hear what they say. My main question is if the pump must also be done.

Will Def phone engine techniques thanks.

Engine Techniques have never come across the problem so cant give advise unless they see the car.
VW very hesitant to give advise even though I told them what is burnt out. They rely on diagnostics that gets sent to Germany.

Looks like my hands are tied.

Thanks everyone!

Scrap yards are hardly ever useful unless you're looking for indicators for a Honda Express

Here in Pretoria we have loads of specialized scrapyards. Never needed to leave without the part I need if it needs to be original. Guess it depends on where you are though.

Yeah I get the feeling that in the auto market it's about who you know. These guys get a wreck, and phone their contacts to come strip what they need and pay for it, and leave a useless shell there.

This fuel control module is not a pseudonym for the sender unit?
