Hi All,
Dont know if this has been posted before but just need some advice/help.

Makro has a Spalding and Dunlop golf set for R799

Just wanted to know if anybody has them/used them before and if its ok for a beginner

Thanks

If you're going for the casual fun with friends once a month approach then yes they are fine.

If you want to get better and eventually join a club etc. then rather go to a pro shop for decent advice and a proper set.

That's only the irons, right?

Yeah it's definitely worth it. Spalding isn't that bad and you won't find anything else cheaper.

Good luck on the course!!

Theres Spalding and Dunlop, both the same price and about the same in terms of club and iron breakdown
Which one would you recommend?

I think that the Dunlop may just have the edge of the Spalding set. In the past there were actually tour players using dunlop euipment.

I have no idea tbh. Check out both sets and see which one you are the most comfortable with.

Thanks guys for all advice
Will check both out today, also will give the Pro Shop a try

Borrow or lend someone else's clubs for the first time or 2, just to see if you even like the game, before spending money on clubs. If you have done that then those clubs will be fine for your use.

I believe buying one of these "all in one" golf sets is not a bad idea for when you start out playing. That way its not such a big investment. If you really enjoy the game, then you must definitely upgrade to a better set. As much as being able to having a good swing helps your golf game, it also helps a stack load having a decent set of clubs.

I also went down the route of buying one of these packages, but it wasn't very long before the golf bug bit, and I had to upgrade my clubs. Now, these Dunlop/ Spalding sets are worth half as much as my putter is worth.

My recommendation is to try hit a couple balls with these spaldings, not sure if this is possible at the likes of Game.. definitely possible at places like Sportsman's Warehouse. Then visit the pro shop find some average "Over size" irons, and give those a hit in the pro shop nets. The difference can be night and day, and may be worth a little bit more cash to ensure you enjoy your game more.

There are some great second hand irons deals at all pro shop and golfers club stores too. You will obviously need to scout out a driver, putter, hybrid etc.

Good luck on the course!!

Thanks for all guys
Will see what happens after i go to Pro Shop in Woodmead later

Ya, I would recommend something second hand from the Pro-shop, even if its a few generations old chances are it will be miles better than a Makro set. For all the golf players on the site what do you think the cure for a chronic massive fade. I have tried swinging more in-to out but I land up duffing most of these shots or hitting it straight left. Any ideas?

Try aiming more left of the target? :P Kidding, thats just treating the symptom. I used to have a fade (massive one) and now I don't fade at all, in fact I have a draw. The two things I concentrated on were when hitting a drive, make sure my hands are never ahead of the club head at time of impact. Club face tends to open when I do that. Also, I try imagine another ball about 10 cm in front my real ball and aim to hit that one too, that way the club head doesn't go off course.

Any tips for getting rid of a draw? Lol. My golf game at the moment is 90% frustration and 10% pure joy. Gotta love it.

The problem with sub R1800 play-sets is that you end up being limited by the clubs way too quickly, especially the driver in the set. With most of the cheap RTP sets, the 5 wood out-drives the bundled driver.
Rather go for something R1800 or up. The Pro-Shop is the right place to find something decent for your money. Game had a nice Wilson Staff RTP set a while back for R2000, which retailed for R3400 at most golf shops.

Don't go for second hand clubs if you can. Apart from it being much nicer to play with a new shiny set, the golf shops make over 200% profit on those 2nd hand sets. And you don't know whether the previous owner cared for them. It is no fun to break off the heads of long irons on your 1st round...

Check your grip, if it is too round or in your palms the clubface will close on your downswing. Your backswing might be coming in too round and you might be rotating too much through the ball. Try a baseball swing with your club to get the feel for a proper rotation.

Managed to sort of sort out my fade, went to a lesson with Warrick at Killarny CC, helped a hell of a lot. Played 9 after the lesson and shot my best score so far, even after completely imploding with the driver through holes 4-8. Just looking for more consistency now and hopefully i can drop 4 or 5 shots from my scores. But I'm still young so I have eons of time.

Got those clubs yet?

Here's a tip : leave the damn driver at home. In fact, only take a wedge, a putter, and irons 4 through 9. When you can actually play those, put the rest of the clubs back in your bag.

Whatever he says, dont do! You need to learn to swing confidently with your driver, woods, irons and wedges. Maybe swapping out your woods for some hybrids would be a good idea as they generally easier to hit but other than that keep everything in the bag. You allowed 14 clubs, so use them.

Made a big effort to concentrate on my grip when I played last Saturday, and I must say it really helped. If anything I had a baby draw which is fine. Shot one of my best scores (83) and now aiming for a high 70s.

If I can give one tip to golfers out there struggling with their swing, I'd say hit the ball softer. Many guys think they have to try hit the ball as hard as you possibly can. This is not true. Take an easy swing and you'd be surprised to see the ball go further and straighter than a muscled swing. It is surprising how soft you can actually hit a ball.

As for not taking a driver and only irons, he has a point. A pro once told me that a golfer starting out should never take a driver to a course. He said the biggest club he should have is a 3 wood. I think it all depends on the golfer. I am ok with my driver and pretty decent with irons 7 - LW. I really struggle with irons 3,4 and 5. So I bought a 4 hyrbrid rescue (22 degree), and it really fills the void left by total incompetence with the 3 and 4 irons. Of all the clubs I have, it is the one I value the most. For me, teeing off with a iron and having a further 180 m into the green is a nightmare situation. So if you hit your driver ok'ish, I recommend sticking with it rather than going down the irons route. A soft drive, will be further than any iron, full swing, you have in your bag.
