Hi guys

Anyone know of a place in PTA (pref PTA East) that sells and fits towbars for the Golf VI?

I know the dealerships will rip me a new one so looking for a place that can give me a decent product at a decent price and while maintaining manufacturer's warranty etc.

If the car is under warranty be careful and I suggest you use a original harness. Problem is that is where the cost is. For my Chrysler they wanted R8500 for a OEM harness and the tow bar was R3500.
They will throw all types of excuses and blame the tow bar if not original and something goes wrong with your car under warranty.

Agreed. Based on this tour best bet would be to go to VW and ask them how to go about the process and all retain warranty. They should be able to assist. Sometimes, all they need to do is a proper inspection after the installation. Get a report/letter stating warranty is still intact.

Yeesh. Wasn't even aware that one needs this harness...

I'm definitely going to ensure my warranty stays intact, though.

Cool, thanks. Will make sure to do this.

With Autobar my warranty stayed in place - I called VW to confirm. Do the same for your car.

Why would you want a (rowboat) towbar on a car like this?
Is it meant to be a towing vehicle?

Edit: yikes my spelling is bad. Rowboat should be towbar

When I bought my Audi, I told them they must fit a regular towbar. It must be fitted under their supervision and I want it written into the purchase agreement as it must be covered under motorplan. They said yes. Years later, a small problem was identified and they said it is going to cost me so and so to fix it. I just told them to look at the purchase documents, fix the problem and claim under motorplan. I was hit with resistance from the service advisor, but insisted he must look at the agreement and come back to me. The next phone call was along the lines of "Sir, your vehicle will be ready for collection at 16h00. No cost incurred."

Cool, thanks. How much did you pay for yours, incidentally? What car do you have?

Bike rack.

Good call. Where'd you install yours, at Audi itself or 3rd party place?

I think it was just shy of R4K. A Tiguan. Autobar did a super job and I have no complaints. I got VWsa to send me a letter to say my warranty will remain intact - just in case :)

Note that they state any damage to your car as result of the äftermarket modification they do not take responsibility for.

I didn't. That is the beauty. Audi had it installed at a 3rd party fitment centre before I took ownership. I just approved the towbar spec before installation - they took the risk (and my money). It was about half the price of their own towbars. They didn't take any profit on the installation either. I can't remember where it was installed. Sorry. But if VW gives you an indication of who they trust/approve, that should be fine as you only want them to honour any warranties. They won't send you to Joe's Backyard fitment centre of they are to remain responsible for the warranties. Get as much as you can in writing

Ah, that's very cool. Thanks for the info. Will definitely pop into VW first and make sure the process is legit.

You dont need the electrical bit for most bike racks so you shouldnt have any warranty issues.
Maybe check with VW about that.

Do you get towbars without the electrical bit? I thought they all came like that by default nowadays?
