I had the same problem with rain vs my vw polo for the past 4 years, until last night. It turns out that the ignition coil had a microscopic crack under the main lead. So every time the car hit a water puddle, the coil would get wet and the spark would leak killing the engine.

More often the problem would last a few minutes and then disappear, until the next water puddle. Many trips to the service technicians brought no relief. The solution is the either, replace the ignition coil if it stop working completely (scrap yards not recommended), or invest in epoxy resin, find the crack, fill it and give the coil new coat, allow it too cure properly, usually over hours just to be safe.

I hope this helps others with a similar problem. Cracked spark plug leads can also give the same symptoms.

Very common problem, especially on the older Polo, Jetta III and Citi.

Just to add to this thread, in its 10 years with me, my Citi never failed in the rain. Come to think of it, other than a dead battery or two, it never failed.
 
Nice necro, I've never known a car to fail due to rain... but i've never owned a VW so...
Another thing in my 15 years of driving and owning many vehicles I've never been stuck on the side of a road other than 2 or 3 flat tires over the years.

I overheated my little 323 so badly that it had constant flames out the exhaust but it completed it's journey, some water and I was off again. Only fixing the radiator the next day.

What i'm saying is that i've only ever owned Japanese cars and not new ones either.

I liked it. To be honest it reminds me of the amount of Corsa Lites I see with problems - not just on rainy days. You can add some Midges and Unos to the list.

The thing is, old cars that were built past their sell-by date just to make a quick buck from the locals tend to break down after a decade - it is not just the Citi.

Tbh any car can be a lemon,

I've seen mercs and bmw's break down in the rain,
I've seen Toyotas and Mazda's overheat on sunny days,

It's all a matter of perspective, if you treat your car right, don't drive in lakes of water, and do some basic maintenance, you won't have issues.

Even the newest car can break down, and even the biggest skedonk can be super reliable if its treated right.....

Toyota Land cruiser overheats, starter motor breaks, alternator breaks, diff breaks,

And then rolls down a sand dune breaking in half.....

While a "unreliable" range rover works perfectly, even tows the Toyota a few times....

I think generally you'll find that has more to do with a certain individual shouting "power!" every time an obstacle presents itself.
 
Any polo 1.4 GTI owners here?
I know of 4 people who owns one and 3\4 of them had major engine issues.
One of them had the engine replaced twice!

The one with no issues thus far is a female driver who has only had the car for a couple of months. (probably already had some surgery done)
 
This thread is finally after more than 3 years starting to move into the right direction.
