Hey all, I need some advice.

my wife recently shown some interest in photography as a hobby, and talk about it a lot. I dont know if it's just a fling or what, so I decided to buy her a bridge camera. We do not have a camera for every day use, or for holiday use, so that also supports my decision on a bridge camera.

I searched a few threads on here, but I would like some more recent views o what to get.

A few years back I helped my sister to buy a Cannon sx (cant remember the model), and as far as I can remember, it was a good camera. I saw 2 cameras so far which caught my eye, they are,

and

I would say I wont spend much more that 5 grand, maybe if really a good deal. And please dont suggest a slr, for now we wont go that way.

I'd go for the Canon. I've used their previous superzoom models (SX30 and SX40) and found them to be solid performers.
If you don't need the long zoom range, consider high-end compact point-and-shoots like the Canon S100 or G15 or even an older Nikon 1 series.

I had an SX1 and SX110 - both were pretty good cameras - but as what said above, you may want to consider a DSLR.

Cons of bridge are they are still pretty large cameras, so they're not exactly slip in your pocket and go. They're limited in some of the manual controls and the manual focusing is horrible.

The plus is they can do macro, they have a very nice zoom range and they do actually have more functions that pure point and shoot.

I actually got the Canon Sx160 this week.

Very nice camera (IMHO). Its not that big so You can cary it easily when you travel. 16mp, 16x zoom, and you can adjust various settings manually, like shutter speed. It also takes AA batteries which is nice if the battery goes flat in the middle of nowhere. You can easily get some. Was on special at game for R1199. Not bad.

Me and my wife decided on the sx50 hs. The best price I can get is R 4700, for the bundle, and R4500 camera only. Anyone maybe knows of a better deal somewhere?

Looking at pricecheck it seems that these prices are good.

I bought this in September 2013. Love it, even though I know nothing about photography. It works well and is easy.

I got it for R4499 from Incredible and then got another 15% cash back from Discovery. That was a sweet deal.
