Honestly these guys need all the charges thrown at them at what can be thought of. Fcking imbeciles. Awesome control by the officer good for him and glad that it turned out positive. Could have been worse if they were carrying or if they had other weapons.

I agree with you. But when it goes to court it looks stupid. Let us see what they say happened.
I believe there is no need to assault anybody. 500 bail is crazy. .

and then run after him into the shop to pick a fight??????!!!!! if they wanted the car they would have taken it.

That makes no difference.
They charges are laid as they occur.
It's the same in all countries basically.

The fact that they tried to get the guy out of his car immediately makes it hijacking.

Johannesburg - Three allegedly drunk men were captured on video attacking a uniformed police officer.

The CCTV footage shows two cars abruptly stopping at a Sasol filling station in Mankweng, east of Polokwane, around 4am on Sunday.

In one car is Constable Tiselani Shikwambana, who had been travelling to his Tzaneen home with his wife.

The other car, which is believed to have pursued the officer’s car for 20km, has three occupants - believed to have been Herdus van Jaarsveld, 27, and siblings Donald and Edwin Albreent, aged 21 and 24.

Once the two cars are parked at the garage, one of the men in the vehicle pursuing Shikwambana alights from the vehicle and is seen kicking the passenger door of the policeman’s sedan.

He then walks towards the driver’s door, giving the officer’s wife a chance to flee into the store.

Suddenly, the 27-year-old officer, who is stationed at Groblersdal police station, steps out of the car with a service pistol.

With the pistol pointing to the ground, Shikwambana walks backwards as the man confronts him.

He manages to flee into the store and quickly hands the weapon to a cashier. Within a moment, two men enter the store and charge at him.

Shikwambana stands still. One of the men tries to slap him, but he ducks backwards.

The guard on duty is pushed aside when he tries to intervene.

A man then hits out at Shikwambana, but unlike in the first attempt, the officer fails to duck and is slapped around the neck.

Wrestling between the officer and the men ensues, but he manages to escape from their grip and runs around the store. But the men follow him, chasing him around the shelves.

Simultaneously, the third man is captured on video smashing the windows of the policeman’s private car with his elbow.

The two attackers inside the store keep pursuing the officer.

Shikwambana can be seen trying to kick his alleged attackers in an attempt to escape. Seeing that the door is open, the policeman bolts.

As the visibly irate men give chase, one of the bystanders tries to calm them down, but he is also slapped.

At this point, other police officers show up as one of the spectators had called for help.

Arriving as the chase continues outside, the officers arrest the three men.

Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the three men were drunk. He said they first pelted bottles at the officer’s car in Dalmada outside Polokwane.

Noticing that the men were “very angry”, the policeman sped off for his safety.

Mulaudzi commended Shikwambana for not discharging his pistol, even when “his life was in danger”.

On Monday, the trio of attackers appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court.

They were charged with malicious damage to property, attempted car hijacking and common assault. The State suggested that they be released on R500 bail each.

Their case was postponed to October 23 for further investigation.

However, Mulaudzi was not happy with the bail amount. “We are very disappointed with a R500 bail. Are we saying it’s all right for a policeman to be assaulted?” he asked.

The Star

They need to get their @sses kicked and then thrown in jail. They seem to have no regards for the laws and hence must suffer the consequences. The cop needs to be held in high regard for not shooting and killing these idiots.

Great response by the officer! He probably would have been in deep schit had he shot them.

What? No drunk driving? So if the driver was sober, that begs the question; what did this officer actually do to piss the driver off so much?

Bail Unfair: COPE

Granting R500 bail to each of three men who allegedly assaulted a policeman and damaged a Polokwane shop was unfair, Cope said on Tuesday.

Congress of the People Chief Whip Dennis Bloem said although bail should be used to ensure the presence of the accused at future proceedings, it had to be aligned with the alleged crime.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said on Saturday that Constable Tiselani Shikwambana was driving in the Polokwane city centre around 4.30am with his wife when another car flashed its lights at him.

The constable let the other car pass, and as it did so the driver slowed down and another occupant threw a bottle at him. It then followed him for about 20km where the officer pulled into a filling station in Mankweng.

There, Herdus van Jaarsveld, 27, and brothers Donald and Edwin Albreent, aged 21 and 24, got out of the car and allegedly broke the windows of the constable's car and kicked its doors.

Shikwambana's wife ran away. He went into the filling station shop, where he handed his firearm to the cashier for safe keeping. The three men, believed to be drunk, entered the shop, and allegedly attacked Shikwambana, and damaged shop property.

A member of the public called the police. Van Jaarsveld and the two other men were arrested and appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Monday.

"He [Shikwambana] was in a difficult position and he held the right to protect himself, but he took a calculated decision to ensure the safety of those around him," said Mulaudzi.

"Although we expect our members to know how to use their firearms, he did a noble thing in ensuring the firearm was kept out of harm's way."

Mulaudzi said the police were not happy with the low bail amount.

"R500 is nothing. He was in uniform and he was attacked. A message should have been sent that anyone who attacks police, their bail needs to be hefty," he said. "It was a slap on the wrist."

The case had been given priority.

Bloem said Cope felt the low bail amount sent the wrong message to would-be police attackers and the general public. The party applauded Shikwambana for not using his firearm, even though he was being attacked.

"We call upon all law enforcement officers and South African citizens to respect and value one another in a bid to avoid police-citizen conflict, whilst working towards effective policing and crime prevention," said Bloem.

The three were expected back in court on October 23.
