You really don't need anything that powerful for the kids educational games. My son (3) has a old p4 with 512mb ram and a 40Gb hard drive that he uses to play his games and watch Ben10. If you are in the JHB area check out scraptronics for some refurbished machines that cost alot less.

Make sure to get him the cars mouse and mousepad from Esquire though :)

I don't think so.
In 4 years time you can get him to mow the lawn, but in 2 years time that computer will be junk.
I vote for: Keep the kid.

Thanks for the info. Will check out the site :)

LMAO :D

Cheri_N : ask around as many people toss old PCs

For my 3yr old son I have a newish Celeron (2 yrs old) with 1GB RAM that was actually on its way to the dustbin. Cost me nadda

Heck, I even got a 1Ghz Celeron at home thats perfect for my new little Geek.

My son plays Comfy Keyboard and it requires only a 500Mhz CPU (PIII)

Rather put the value into the monitor and then again I'm considering a CRT (also free or R100 from Cash Converters) as the little ones tend to touch the screens all the time. Since you anyway drop the resolution, you can up the refresh rate (> 60hz) and this is 100% safe for their eyes.

Just looked at that and those guys are expensive considering it's second hand, (yes you get a crt thrown in but those are cheap). I would rather buy new and get the warranty as well, price is about the same but more powerful except you don't get a monitor.

Edit:
SPECIAL
Dell GX520 Desktop
2.8GHz CPU
1024MB DDR-2
80GB SATA
DVD ROM
XP Pro Licence
With 17" Dell CRT
R 1800.00

On second thought you must be nuts to pay that compared to what the OP listed. There are people giving away or charging like R500 for computers with those specs.

Cheri_N,

I'm sure that between all the tech heads on this forum you could probably get a P4 spec computer for you kid for free or like R500 that will be more than sufficient. A while ago I gave a few away but I also live to far away. Something like that loaded with Edubuntu (full of educational stuff) & lots of games your kids needs would be met.

Just change the cpu to a dual core. Any dual core. They grow up fast and you dont want to spend more sooner than you have to.

Thanks for all of the info guys :)

Should I post a wanted ad in the classifieds? I really don't mind paying for a computer with those specs - don't expect it for nothing ;)
