I am looking for a good budget gaming laptop for my wife.

Budget is around 15k - 16k.

Doing some research online, I came across the ASUS TUF Gaming 15 FX505GT and I want to know if anyone has experience with the Asus TUF series?

Any other suggestions or feedback would also be very much appreciated!

I managed to get an Asus TUF FX505DT at the start of the year for 13k. Some minor differences in specs like a 256 gig ssd, not 512. Also a 60 hz monitor, not 144 hz. Only complaint I have is the 60hz screen (which is the one on most models in SA) is kak for any kind of fast paced gaming. You can play some games on it but anything like Apex Legends or CS and it becomes a smeared mess. I guess you need to aim for a 144 hz model.

Can't vouch for them but...

Only problem is once you add an SSD and extra 8 gigs of ram and an official windows license it's not so cheap any more...

Only ROGs, no TUFs thus far, so only indirect experience.

The 3.5mm audio jack on both mine were dodgy - loud clicks when it comes out of sleep/starts a audio stream. No other issues.

They're heavy AF so you don't want to travel with them.

You'll probably want to think about how many games you'll be installing vs SSD size. And I'd go with 16gig for a gaming machine if possible.

Some of the Asus laptops have gsync built in which is nice, plus obv 120+ hz is a bonus.

And no bitlocker on windows home - in case you travel / it gets nicked.

Some of the asus laptops have a 2nd storage bay, but unsure which models. Given that this one is advertised with a hdd as option I suspect you can put both a nvme and a sata ssd in it

Wootware's stuff is pretty good. Those are TongFang/Clevo notebooks, which are rebranded in other countries. I'm particularly taken with this one, which looks like a MechRevo design: https://www.wootware.co.za/wootbook...full-hd-1920x1080-ips-space-black-laptop.html

Although, RAM speed is a pain. The Ryzen-based notebooks that Wootware offers can go up to DDR4-3200, but they don't seem to offer this in the configurator. You'd have to buy that separately. The Ryzen 3000 notebooks out there go up to DDR4-2933, and Ryzen 4000 mobile chips go up to 3200MHz.

The cheaper TUF notebooks are okay. The displays are dimmer than expected, and stuck at 60Hz. The hardware is a good deal, but most models are based on the Intel 9300H processor. There are some concerns about the hinge mechanism, and I don't think ASUS has learned from their past lessons at all. Modern shipments might not suffer the same issues.

Here's a cheaper listing for the FX505, which might get restocked later: https://www.incredible.co.za/asus-tuf-gaming-fx505-amd-ryzen-5-notebook-gtx1650-2. The three-year warranty through Incredible Corruption is a good deal. Evetech is selling the same thing, but listing the warranty as three year on-site, in which case you'd get on-site support from Asus' partners.

The FA506IU is a better machine, and they've fixed the hinges finally, but it's pricey: https://www.wootware.co.za/asus-fa5...ws-10-home-bonfire-black-gaming-notebook.html

Acer's Nitro 5 is also decent. My brother has one, and I spent some time with it. Nicely built, not too cheaply built either. Decent expansion options. https://raru.co.za/electronics/8167...dia-geforce-gtx1650-4gb-win-10-home-15-6-inch

I've also seen these in person: https://www.evetech.co.za/hp-pavili...tx-1660-ti-laptop/laptops-for-sale/12318.aspx. They are lovely machines.

There's someone flogging a Wootbook on carb. 10th gen intel, 2060 max-p (115w), 144hz FHD screen and 1TB Nvme for 25k neg.

I'm broke else I would have gone for it.

Hi Everyone!

Thank you so much for all your input and assistance with my quest for a new laptop for my wife.

We ended up buying a 2nd hand (less than 1 month old) WootBook Ultra II.
So far it is really worth every cent!
