Good "free" software

Noswal reminded me of an obvious one:

Spyware/Adware cleaner immuninisation: Spybot Search & Destroy.

Comment: This is an excellent utility and has a memory resident option to check registry changes and to track ActiveX installations. I would recommend it to anyone connected to the internet. ESPECIALLY if they use MS Internet Explorer.

For web development of course there are Apache, PHP, MySQL and Perl, all pretty much indispensable. I usually use the xampp (http://www.apachefriends.org/xampp-en.html) bundle to install them.

Not end-user software but for software development I use the free wxWidgets (http://www.wxwidgets.org/) library.

I also can't do without UnixUtils (Win32 ports of a number of Unix/Linux utils like wget, tar, grep, gzip, bzip2, cat, ls, wc etc.) (http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/).

And of course I use Firefox and OpenOffice frequently. Relevant to SA: Translated versions of OpenOffice have recently been released in Afrikaans, Zulu and Northern Sotho (http://translate.org.za/).

I thought I'd regenerate this thread....

Found a good, easy & simple VNC service, it's free (as in beer), and doesn't require static IP!

Works really well on my adsl connection to control my home PC (winXP) from the office. There is a subscription service available as well if you want to transfer files, but I don't really need this - I just use it to monitor downloads.

nice one arf9999.... only ****ty thing is you cant reconnect your sentech at home from work :(
And I still havent figured it out with MySignal...

As for free software I must say two things I am grateful for. Nothing Fancy and perhaps not the best
but winamp is still my favourite mp3 player
and Mozilla FireFox is the best thing since the internet...

Anyone know decent mail clients... I am unhappy with Mozilla Thunderbird (way too glitchy and backward)

myWireless 128, 64, 48, 16 - depends on its mood.

One of the few things that the malcontents in these parts seem to agree on is multithreaded downloads. I recently stumbled across Free Download Manager -see http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/. On top of being a really cracking dl manager that fits really well with MyWi, according to the site it does a fair bit more besides; well worth checking out.

For those who use multithreaded DL managers like Flashget (although the free version is full of spyware), Getright, Leechget, Net Transport and I think even freedownloadmanager, there is quite a useful extension for firefox called Flashgot which allows you to download directly via context (right click) menus.

I am finding that my favourite dl managers is Leechget, the interface is simple and the control over number of threads is great. One words of warning, so called "intelligent" anti-virus and intrusion detection software like Norton Internet Security identifies the use of certain ports as a trojan attack, so you may have to modify your firewall/security settings.
