Good gaming rig?

I currently have an AMD dual core, so I'm looking at upgrading from that.

Maybe I should post the specs of my current machine here, so you guys can get a better idea of what I'm trying to upgrade from? Should have thought about that. Meh.

I will do so when I get home tonight.

Thanks for all the help so far though. Much appreciated.

Morning gents.

Thanks for all the feedback.

So, this is what I have so far:

http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?products_id=19238
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?products_id=17039
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?products_id=20081 x 2

I decided to get a new hard drive as well. Any suggestions? I was looking at the lists on Sybaritic, and this one looked good?

http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=61_64&products_id=20709

If I get the things on this list, I'll have a good enough rig to last me for a while, right?

MB is fine.

The RAM you got is 1066MHz while the MB will only take 800Mhz so you can get yourself cheaper ram, DDR2-800.

CPU, personally I would get a quad core but have heard good things about the E5200.

HD is fine.

My current machine is:

Motherboard: Asus M2NPV-MX
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.2Ghz
Memory: 2 Gigs. Not sure about brand.
Graphics card: 512M nVidia GeForce 9600 GT

So I basically wanna better that.

Why? Is that not good enough already?

I am looking at getting something a bit better than that, but not much. My buget is <R3k though :(

Well, I don't know... is it? Heh.

Here's the whole story:

I want to use my boyfriend's machine as a Media Centre PC, 'cos I'm sick of struggling with the stupid Mvix media player THING that we got. We're always having hassles with it picking up the rest of the machines on the network when we share stuff. So I'm looking forward to throwing the *bleeping* thing against the wall when I replace it!

Anyway, I digress. The plan is then to give him this machine and getting a new one for myself. This machine is good, but I played Mirror's Edge last week and it ran fine for the most part, even at 1900 x 1200 rez, but there were a few places that it struggled and I got some stuttering.

So yes, my current machine is good, no doubt about it, but considering that I have to buy another machine, I might as well buy something a little better. :)

Hmm. Gaming on my 42" HDTV is pretty cool- why not use the one PC for everything? You going to sell the Mvix? Throw it my way rather:D

Well, the Media Centre PC is going to sit in the lounge, connected to the projector, and it's for watching movies, basically.

As for the MVIX, probably going to give it to my step-son. He's been moaning about getting movies to play on his TV from his PC :)

Just thought I'd update everyone. I got my new machine yesterday :)

I ended up getting:

AMD Phenom Quad CPU
Asus motherboard
4 gigs of memory
500gig SATA hdd
SATA DVD writer

Cost me about R3750 and it's SOOOO fast!

Thanks very much to everyone for their help and feedback.

There's one issue that's still puzzling me though: for some reason Windows 7 says only 3 gigs of my memory is usable. It's two 2 gig chips, so it's not a hardware fault. It says I have four gigs installed, but only three usable?

Am I missing something or just being retarded?

I can't wait to get home tonight and test drive it on a game! :)

I'm assuming you are using Windows 7 32bit? As it only picks up 3 gigs max, no matter how much you have.

Rather switch to the 64 bit windows 7 to utilize all your ram.

Hi, which quad core phenom Is that? And which graphics card did you end with?

What brand & model is that?
It's a Seagate one. Not sure about the model number though.

Oh damn. Okay. Reinstall... again. LOL!

Description on the invoice says "AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core CPU". That help?

That's the old phenom1 2.6Ghz quad. For extra performance switch off cool'n quiet in your bios.
