Good makes for HDD these days

So I'm getting the feeling one of my HD drives is about to throw up for the last time before it rolls over and plays dead.

So, what are decent manufacturers of HDD's these days that I can look at for a replacement. It needs to be SATA2 BTW.

I always used to only buy WD but some years ago they started getting a bit of a bad name. Glad to see they are back. I was thinking Seagate Barracuda at the moment

Maxtor and seagate have merged or the one bought the other was what I heard a year or so ago.

I've always had maxtor at school because they are the cheapest and in about 80 harddrives I had 2 failures in 3 years.

my samsungs are lasting me pretty well, but WD is the best..... I think Next time i'll buy another samsung again - hasn't failed me yet.

If you buy a 7200.11 drive just make sure it is flashed with right firmware and you will have no hassles.

How much more are Samsungs? Or are these all much of a muchness i.t.o. cost/GB and warranty? I like the sound of a 5yr warranty- does Samsung match that?

Samsungs are cheaper.

Seagate has always been the most reliable and popular hdd around, the .11 drives were definately a bugger up (AFAIK it was a new technology which didn't quite work the way they wanted to). The .12 drives are out now and they are getting good reviews.

But still, if I was buying at the moment, it would be in this order.

Western Digital
Seagate (just make sure not to get a older .11)
Samsung

So .11 series were an epic fail, now to reassure their customers, they have dropped to 3 yr warranties?

Next drive I buy is a Samsung. I'm waiting for 2TB drives to reach a nice pricepoint

Did anyone factor idle temps in? postman pot's samsung looks good and IIRC my samsung was cooler too - i'll check tonight and post....
